Re: BotFA Box Office
$11.2m in Tuesday evening sneaks, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That's a very good start, better than SMAUG (8.8m), though not as good as AUJ (13m). Starting on Wednesday doesn't translate exactly to the Friday openings that the previous two movies had, but we can perhaps use ROTK as a benchm...

"Taking it seriously" and "having fun" are not mutually exclusive comments. :) Lynch's DUNE is awesome. A travesty, of sorts, but still awesome none-the-less. Edit: I love Malick, but you'd have to be wildly naive to assume he'd be remotely faithful to his LOTR adaptation. Just l...

The were-worms were cool, but I think Thorin screaming, "Father! The sleeper has awakened!" was a bit much.

I feel bad for the RT staff every time one of these big fan-driven movies come out.

Re: BotFA Box Office
One thing to keep an eye on is exchange rates. The dollar is stronger this year, which'll hurt BOFTA overseas (the opposite of how ROTK was helped by a weak dollar).

Re: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
WB has just put out another trailer, this one tying together all 3 Hobbit films into one. It feels very much like a trailer for one single movie, and it's absolutely fantastic:

"Defiant" over at TORN makes the following observation: The conversation about Strider and Arathorn had nothing to do with Aragorn. I think you guys might be completely missing the subtext in this scene. It was Thranduil's way of admitting his error to his son without losing face. He says...

It's funny how everyone approaches things differently. I've learned to stay away from ANY details at all... and my enjoyment of the films is much greater than if I knew what to expect and what changes were going to happen. If I had known about many of the details you guys were already quite familiar...

An acquaintance of mine (on another board) just saw it in Germany, and (mostly) loved it. (To be fair, he also really enjoyed parts 1 and 2).

Yes, they do just suddenly show up. My recollection is that I assumed they arrived with Dain's troops.

"Penultimate" means second to last. "Penultimate final film" is an oxymoron.Dave_LF wrote:My thought was: isn't Return of the King the penultimate final film? I guess it depends whether you treat the Middle-Earth or Chronos chronology as primary.

That's very odd, as some of the early reviewers stated that the rams had been removed... Did some people perhaps seen an unfinished cut? Now you've got me doubting myself. I could've sworn I saw them, unless somehow my memory is conflating the movie with the TV spots. What's definitely in ar...

Re: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
I think this quote: But the thing with The Hobbit I will tell you... I went into it very unprepared. Because Guillermo [Del Toro, the original director] had 18 months of prep, and he couldn’t do the films and I took them over and I only had six months of prep. I didn’t have time to highlight any st...
