Welcome, Beorhtnoth! Incidentally, one of my dreams is to visit Corfe Castle, hopefully next year. Do you know the connection between Corfe Castle and your username?
(I would have gone there last year, but, you know... Covid and all that stuff...)

How lovely to see a new member who actually talks! Welcome

Seems like he's someone we should think about." - Dave_LF

Thank you Inanna, Jude and elengil for the warmth of your welcomes.
I hope any enthusiasm for my potential contribution is not misplaced!
Beorhtnoth and Corfe Castle? Could it be marriage to the sister of the wife of the stepmother of the king whose wife had a residency on the site where Corfe Castle was built?
That seems too much like six degrees of Kevin Bacon.

Re: GREETINGS to our Newest Members!
The Battle of Maldon took place during King AEthelred II's reign. The only reason AEthelred was king was that his elder brother, Edward the so-called Martyr, was murdered at Corfe Castle.
There were rumours that Edward was murdered on the orders his stepmother, Queen Ælfthryth, so that her son AEthelred would succeed to the throne. But to be fair, it's equally possible that Ælfthryth was just as horrified by the crime as the rest of England was. What is indisputable is that Aethelred's reign was an unmitigated disaster.
If I ever make it to Corfe Castle, I promise to post loads of pictures. I find this time period fascinating.
And now I'll stop hijacking this welcome thread. For now.....

And so not to maintain a hijacking, I will end by being the bearer of bad news: Corfe Castle is a Norman stronghold. Edward would have been murdered at the site, but not the castle. That was constructed a century and more later.
So little of Saxon England remains. A famous writer created a whole mythology to fill that gap...

And hence this site exists.

Re: GREETINGS to our Newest Members!
Don't worry, you're not the bearer of bad news I was aware that the building is not the same one that was there at the time. I still want to go to visit the site where it happened. I'm just hoping they have signs pointing out exactly where he was when he was stabbed, where his body was found after his horse dragged him away, where the original house stood, etc.
