They don't let you enter words that aren't in its vocabulary. Watch out for duplicate letters. In yesterday's case, a G lit up green, but there were actually 2 of them in the correct word - GORGE. My strategy is to enter 3 words with unique letters. I include all of the vowels, AEIOUY, plus the most likely consonants, CDHLMNSRT. After that, there's generally enough to determine the word in another two or three guesses. For example: TRAIN, LUCID, MONEY, uses 14 unique letters.
