Seems like he's someone we should think about." - Dave_LF

After her first budget was, er, not well-received, the King greeted Liz Truss at their first weekly audience with "Back again? Dear oh dear". HM doesn't quite have his mother's polite reserve.

Re: World News Thread
A week after Liz Truss sacked Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng, Home Secretary Suella Braverman has been forced to resign after she sent an official document via her personal email. The tabloid Daily Star has set up a livecam seeing if Truss will outlast a lettuce. If Truss does somehow pull through I expect we'll hear a lot about lettuces for the rest of her prime ministership, but the odds are lengthening.

And she has resigned, becoming the shortest-serving PM in history.
The British system is confusing, but many believe this means the head of lettuce is in charge now.

Re: World News Thread
And it's not even close. If Truss really is gone within a week, she'll have lasted about 50 days. The previous record is held by George Canning at 119 days in 1827, the shortest of the 20th century was Bonar Law at 211 days in 1922–23, and the shortest since World War II was (until now) Alec Douglas-Home at 363 days in 1963–64.
Hard to see how this Tory Party can hold out for another two-plus years without a generation election, but it wouldn't be the strangest thing to happen in modern British politics.

Liz Truss lasted 4.1 Scaramuccis, as Anthony Scaramucci himself pointed out.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Re: World News Thread
Any chance that Labor will be able to force a quick general election?

Very low to be honest - the Conservatives have 356 of 650 seats in the Commons.Voronwë the Faithful wrote: ↑Fri Oct 21, 2022 2:30 am Any chance that Labor will be able to force a quick general election?

Re: World News Thread
Remarkably, there seems to be some talk of a Boris Johnson comeback. I don't think it will happen, but just the fact that people are talking about it is really something.

There's more than "some talk;" he has numerous backers and the Metaculus prediction market has him as the second-most likely candidate:

Re: World News Thread
I will be very surprised if it doesn't end up being Sunak in the end, but stranger things have happened.

Please...NO...not Johnson!!
When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes The Rose.
