Okay - could it be Merry or Pippin referring to their bad memories of their journey with Ugluk and his gang?

Here is the quote to bring it to this page.
Eldy wrote: Tue Dec 06, 2022 1:40 amI'll try, but just imagining that smell makes my heart warm and I scream.
Is it on the journey to Mordor?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

It is not said by Merry or Pippin.

It's technically not said on the journey to Mordor, but in Mordor itself.

Is the translation fairly accurate? And is there a specific smell to which the speaker is referring?

The speaker is not referring to an actual smell, but there is a synonym of "smell" that appears in the original quote (or a word derived from a synonym of "smell," if you wanna get technical).

Sam talking about Gollum: ‘I’ll try,’ said Sam, ‘but when I think of that Stinker I get so hot I could shout.’
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Would this be Gandalf stopping some foolhardy fellowship members from barging into a chamber in Moria that ended up having a huge hole in the middle of the floor?

Sounds Entish to me.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Might this be Farmer Maggot saying he'll "Learn 'em"?

ETA: No wait, is it Butterbur when Bob/Nob says "They're back" meaning the Hobbits and he thinks its the Ruffians?
