On another forum I visit, there is a thread wherein people post their choice of "the most beautiful thing ever written". It's really interesting and I must say, nearly everything posted brings tears to my eyes. Not all, but an awful lot.
I have my favourites, of course. But here is one posted by someone that I had never come across before and I can't read it without weeping:
By Atatürk (who was a divisional commander during the Gallipoli campaign):
Those heroes that shed their blood And lost their lives...
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.
Therefore, rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies
And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side,
Here in this country of ours.
You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries...
Wipe away your tears.
Your sons are now lying in our bosom And are in peace.
After having lost their lives on this land, they have
Become our sons as well.
(You were a little too quick for me, Holbytla!)
The most beautiful thing ever written?
The most beautiful thing ever written?
