Well Mith, I have requested FMA manga from the library. I have already started with the anime and so far what I have seen I liked. Although at some point the characters jump from 12 to 15. Also I understand about the diff between anime and manga of the same series. Fortunately for me I skipped all the Bleach fillers (2 years worth). I will give things a go withthe anime and hopefully it doesn't divert too much from the manga. (I hate when that happens) Usually when another writer gets involved I can tell right away (like with Fruits basket they did a terrible job, even my sis who never read a page of manga could tell). I could tell with Bleach too.

Right now I have got some of Azumanag Daioh and Yotsuba& from the library to read. Also I have decided to get back to Death Note based on some peoples recomendations. I have more to post but right now it's really really hot and I need to relax a bit.

In the FMA anime, the characters start out as 14 and 15 years old in episode 1 and 2. Then, they do a flashback, so that episode 3 is their childhood. The flashback runs from episode 3 (Mother) to episode 9 (Be Thou For the People [Youswell]), and Ed is 12 for most of that. At the end of episode 9, they have a scene where 15-year-old Ed is headed to Liore (so just prior to ep. 1), letting you know that everything is caught back up to the present. Then episodes 10-12 are 'filler', but only in the sense that they are anime-only. It's character development more than plot advancement, but still relevant. Episode 13 is strictly humor, but they use even that to introduce a serious theme (and the humor is based on the extras at the end of the manga ;)).

In the manga, most of the stuff that happens in the 'flashback' to 12-yr-old Ed actually doesn't happen until Ed is 15 (the train, Youswell, the snowstorm). So, the manga stays 'real time' for longer before taking time off for flashbacks. Volume 6 is a flashback to the boys' childhood, and Volume 15 is a flashback to Ishbal. Some of the unpublished chapters actually flash back to much earlier, giving you some history of the country.

By 'diverge' I mean they end up taking the story in a different direction with different explanations, plot points and goals. So, different characters are responsible for different things, how a homunculus is created varies, the goal of Scar's brother is different, etc. The story hadn't been written yet when they did the anime, so they just made up their own story, developing the themes and characters in a direction that worked. It does work, but it means the second half of the anime is an original story. So far in the manga, there has been no questioning of the concept of Equivalent Exchange, whereas that becomes an important part of the anime.

I prefer the richer, more sprawling story of the manga, but I will admit that the anime handles some characters and themes better.

The thing I love most about FMA is that she doesn't say "THis person is in the right" She allows us to decide for ourselves who is morally right, and she doesn't point fingers. She shows both sides of the story equally.

I also love the way she draws herself as a cow... :)

I have read up to volume 4 of FMA. Tomorrow I will be getting some more. I am realizing the story is very very harsh although there is some comedic moments. Why did the manga-ka kill off the Lieutenant colonel Hughes? Why? Can't the devoted Daddy type survive? I thought it was so cute how he talked about his wife and daughter all the time. I thought he would be a regular in the manga. Now he's dead. Crudmuffins. His wife is a single mother and the kid doesn't have a Daddy. Gah!!!

I think tomorrow I will see if there are anymore volumes of Yotsuba&! to cheer me up. It is so cute and funny. Reading Some Ranma 1/2 did not cheer me up, although it was funny.

I want to see this:

The Girl Who Leapt Though Time

I've read really good reviews of it, and it looks like it is finally getting a U.S. release.

I have wanted to see this for a while. I don't know if will get a Canadian release though. I probably will have to wait until it comes to DVD.

I have read up to volume 9 for FMA. Holy Fudge lots of people die in this manga. I hate Mustang!!!. Also I have learned why the manga-ka draws herself as a cow, she grew up on a dairy farm.

I have taken back Azumanag Daioh for now since four panel manga does not appeal to me. I am sure I will enjoy the series though. I know they are mini episodes but I have tried Chi's Sweet home which has mini eps and I really like them. So I am sure the TV show for Azumanaga Daioh will work for me.

I have read up to volume 3 for Yotsuba&! which is so sweet and adorable. I definitely want to buy the series if ADV can decide where they want to continue doing manga.

I find I am really liking past artworks for CLAMP even for some series I have not read yet. Like Clover and a little bit of X. I hope I don't become a clamp addict.

I am slowly realizing my list for manag and anime DVDs is getting longer and longer. I am ascared when Birthday and Christmas come around as it's alot of stuff. (Alot to me anyway). All of the Mushi SHi, anime Yotsuba&! and least the CLAMP and Bleach manga calendars. Dang. Not to metion any Ouran merch that appeals to me and some Furuba merch and the hardcover books. Shakes head. Also I want Legal drug. I have faith they will finish it. ;) :blackeye:

I had wanted to ask what do people think of the current publishers of manga in English? I find I have issues with VIZ and their translations sometimes and their censorship over all. ADV is really bugging me since whenever they decide they want to concentrate on DVDs again they put their manga on hiatus which is why Yotsuba&! volume 6 had a release date and they missed it. (Grr..). I like Tokyo pop and I am loving Del Rey. Although I still wish we could have Tsubasa in hardcover (like they do in Japan (with exclusive covers)) and have coloured borders for the pages of the books for xxxHolic (like they do in Japan).

Maybe I will get into English studios in a another post.

Wilma, I agree. The Viz translations often have phrases that don't quite work, and I get the feeling a helluva lot is lost in translation.

Del Ray are the best I've experienced so far, without question. It's great that they give all the little Japanese things that don't happen in the West, sign translations and the interesting references to other manga at the back. It makes for a far more immersive and fulfilling experience than wondering if some idiom has been lost.

My issues with VIZ (primarily censorship) has bothered me so much I have decided to stop buying manga published by them. I find myself infuriated rather then enjoying a good read. :( I wish it didn't bother me so much or I would have all of Bleach, Ouran and Ranma 1/2 but I have tried to over come it and I just find myself even more disappointed for parting with money for their product. :( :help:

I 100% agree with you on Del Rey.

I do not know any Japanese, so I can't be sure about censorship of FMA, but I get the impression there is a good bit more cussing in the original than in the published version. This impression is fueled by online scanlations (fan translations) and by characters saying things like, "Why you - !" in the published version.

There is one instance where the drawing was censored. They apparently were upset with the idea of Greed appearing to be crucified. Wikipedia has examples of the before and after. I'm a Christian, and I didn't find the original drawing offensive, but whatever. I doubt the artist was attempting to draw any parallels to crucifixion, so nothing is lost, I guess.

It bugs me that they can't make up their mind how to translate proper names. Liore is sometimes Reole. Ishbalans can be Ishvarlans. Mei Chang is sometimes May Chang. I forget if Lan Fan is ever called Ran Fan in the published books, but probably. I realize that when you transliterate, it doesn't always work, but just pick a spelling and stick with it, please! I'd prefer consistency between volumes, and I don't think I'm asking that much.

Wilma, if you thought chapter 15 of the manga was bad...that doesn't happen until halfway into the anime. So, it's even more gutting there. As for Mustang...keep reading ;). Let me just say that his best friend is not a poor judge of character.

Crucifer, I'm not sure that she's showing both sides, so much as giving her good guys very checkered pasts. As in, very. If-this-were-Nuremburg, you'd-be-condemned kind of checkered pasts. Almost all of her characters are seeking for redemption in some way. The good guys are good, not because they have been their whole lives, but because they are seeking to make things better. So, a bad guy can become a good guy over the course of the story. As Mustang says at one point - he's often been called a monster himself, so it's only when he goes up against a real monster that he feels truly human.

In the anime, the line is more blurred, I'll admit. It is sometimes difficult to figure out who is on what side and which ones you should be rooting for ;). But I still see a clear distinction in the manga, even if someone like Scar has been on both sides of the line over the course of the story.

Oh, and I'm headed to AnimeNEXT this weekend, so hopefully I'll have a chance to check out some series beyond FMA. I'll be sure to come back and discuss them with you when I do!

Well, Mith, I agree that there is a clear group of people who are definitely the bad guys, but outside of them, everyone else (the manipulated) are just people.

Oooh Mith definitely check out the video rooms. I am so glad I decided to give those a try, I haven't been to con with several all night video rooms. So much fun. I have read up to volume 10 and now I can say I don't hate Mustang any more. I actually felt a little sorry for Lust though and Gluttony actually grieved for her, :D I will say it is well written. I like it more for the story then the art but the art is OK. I can tolerate it with out being annoyed. I was hoping I would be able to figure out which panel was the censored one. Fudge. But it looks like it's coincidental that it looks like a cross. I can see ViZ being concerned. About the name inconsistencies. I totally noticed that. I have read several Viz publications and this one has the the most obvious mistakes I have seen. Especially names that start with L and R. That is why in one chapter when it looks like Mustang is chatting up a girl on the phone called Elizabeth, I realized he was talking to Riza which can also be said as Liza, Japanese and the L and R thing. I didn't realize they were up to 16 in North America. I am going to end up catching up pretty quick then.

I find quite a few of the characters I really like. Thanks for getting me into it Mith.

Also Mith if you actually give a mini report I will actually say some more about how great Anime North was. (Actually a friend and I are planning a panel for next year already.)

If you say what you are interested in I am sure we can give you recomendations. Also I learned sometimes it's good to trust friends even if it's something you think you might not like. Like I was so wrong about Mushi shi. I totally thought it wasn't for me at all. A friend forced me to watch the anime and then I fell in love with the series  . I ended up getting into Bleach because I watched as a joke after reading Pips Sid and Dawnamira rave about it.

Con report on AnimeNEXT, as requested. :D

I had a good time. I went to the con alone, which can be awkward. But I set it up that I would help one of the dealers with his booth in exchange for free lodging (well, okay, floor space) and a badge. So, basically, I got to attend to the con for free. My only expences were gas, tolls and meals. So, that was pretty awesome! Of course, it meant I had to spend a lot of time standing in the booth selling plushies, but that didn't bother me.

I had a few goals at the con - check out some new (to me) anime and manga, and see all the pretty cosplay :). I got to do both.

I arrived at the con early Friday afternoon after a 3 hour drive. I left my car in a parking garage for free for the weekend (that is the theme of this trip - everyone loves me and gives me things for free). Actually, I'm not even sure I paid tolls on the way up, because when I used my change from a bridge toll to pay the NJ Turnpike toll, I discovered more change then I expected. So, it's possible they paid me to use their roads...how kind of them :) (It's equally possible that I was confused.)

Anyway, right, so then I sold plushies. This is harder than it looks when you have *no clue* what the names of anything is. I did a lot of pointing and raising eyebrows until I got the right one. But people were mostly nice and not too socially awkward, so it was fun. There were a few people who clearly need to get out more, but I'm not one to talk. The booth next to us was selling porn, so it was annoying to listen to the guy there pimp his wares to passerbys. At least he required 18+ ID for browsing. But I do wish to remain as ignorant about Hentai as possible.

Anyway, once out of the booth, I moved my stuff to the hotel and went in search of anime. I saw a few episodes of Gunslinger Girl and determined it was very, very sad and upsetting. Since the scenario is that young girls are turned into cyborgs and then brainwashed into assassins, it's not that surprising that the angst is through the roof. It's a short anime, but I don't think I want to watch the rest of it. One of the girls has the same voice as Winry, though, so that was fun. :) Most of the anime was subbed, not dubbed, of course, but for this one they showed the dub.

I also checked out their manga library. I thought it would be a good idea to read something by CLAMP, so I read the first volume of XXXholic and Tsubasa Chronicles. I thought XXXholic was interesting, and of course totally identified with the girl who is addicted to the internet :). I'm not sure what I think of the heavy emphasis on fate, but it is contrasted with a strong sense of self-determination, too, so it might work out and prove interesting.

I had to look into Tsubasa, because some of the girls I talk to on TORc really, really like Fai :). I can see why now; he's an interesting character. But what's-his-face....Saiyoran?...is cool too. I happen to like earnest young men who want to save people :). After all, who doesn't like Will Turner and his 'Elizabeth-goes-free' attitude in Pirates of the Caribbean? But it seems kinda obvious to me that even if she doesn't get her memory back, she's going to find out pretty quickly how much he cares about her. So, I'm not too worried about the love story. Oh, and that is so Equivalent Exchange, so I'm good with that :). Overall, I'm not sure I'm interested enough in this story to keep reading it, but it was entertaining. Sakura's older brother seems nice, but since we just left him mortally wounded, I suppose I should worry about his fate. I just doubt we're going to see him again any time soon.

And I must agree that Del Ray has a nice format and good explanations. I haven't gotten the whole sama/san/chan honorific system down yet, but I do think it's good to either keep it, or do a good job with conveying it in translation.

It was late, I went to bed. On to Saturday...

Free breakfast from the hotel, to continue the trend. Oh, and my booth was selling both pocky and ranume(?), so I got to try both of those. Sat., I could help when I wanted to, and run off and see things when I wanted to. So, I ditched the booth shortly after the doors opened and went to watch the first four episodes of Samauri 7. Definitely liked it! It has clever humor to it (esp. with the little sister). This was subbed, not dubbed, so I got to try to follow along with it that way. It worked fine; the emotions were clearly conveyed in the inflection and voices. I also have to get used to Japanese names; at this point, I can only remember the main character (Kikara - she'd make a cool cosplay, by the by...) I don't like the comic relief robot-samuari (I suppose I should learn how to spell that word...), but I like the other characters, and I think it will be neat to see this first and then watch the original 1950's Kurosawa film later. I know I want to see the rest of it at some point, but I'm not sure if I want to spend real money to buy it. We'll see. It didn't come home from the con with me, though I did consider it.

Grabbed lunch to go and went back to the booth for about an hour. Then escaped to go to the FMA cosplay photoshoot; I was Trisha Elric, the dead mom. There were bunches of Ed's, of course, and a couple of Al's from the movie (umm, right, I suppose I shouldn't spoil anything). Two Winrys. Also a handful of military people (2 Hughes, Riza and Mustang). Both Hughes had pictures of Elicia with them ;). Oh, and a Greed, so there was a 'let all the Ed's gang up on Greed' shot; very funny. There were other FMA cosplayers walking around the con, but for whatever reason, they didn't know about the photoshoot. I saw a Lust and an Envy, and on Sunday, a Wrath.

Back to the booth until we closed for the day, then down to Artist's Alley to see all the neat stuff. I ended up buying an FMA crosstich after being told that the artist in question was very depressed and needed to sell stuff to cheer up. Since I was dressed as her 'mom' I had little choice in the matter ;). This seemed more interesting than waiting for an hour for the Cosplay skits, but that did mean I had to sit on the floor when I did go upstairs, and watch them all on the jumbotrons because I couldn't see the stage. Ah well; most of the skits were good, and some were very funny. While they were waiting for the judges, they also showed the AMVs that won, and those were very good.

You might note that dinner was not mentioned, so after this, I skipped out of the announcements of the winners and went to Subway. There was one poor guy behind the counter and a bunch of anime fans milling around at 10 PM, so of course it was a long wait. But I didn't want to get a sit down meal, so it was okay. The girl behind me in line was dressed for the rave, but was very happy to see me in FMA cosplay. We chatted for awhile. (Okay, it seemed like a 20 min. wait, but I might be exagerating). When I got my food, I walked back to the hotel, and stopped to talk to one of the Ed cosplayers. I then coincidentally met up with the people I was staying with, which was good, because apparently they were checking roomkeys to let you in to the hotel now (and I didn't have one). So, I decided to stay in for the rest of the night just to avoid confusion, and besides, after I ate and took a shower, it was late enough. But they put on CN's adult swim, so I saw an episode of Death Note and an episode of Code Geass. Death Note really does not impress me in the clips I've seen of it, and this did nothing to change that impression. I'm just not interested, I guess. The Code Geass storyline looked a lot more interesting, though one episode wasn't really enough for me to figure out what I think of the show.

Woke up on Sunday, went to the booth. I intended to watch parts of the cosplay chess, but I missed it. I ended up going to a panel on fanfic writing, and I did not much like it. Granted, I know that most fanfic is awful, and written by beginners. So, it's okay to say that. But the woman giving the panel decided that it was her job to tell us that, and I really didn't think it made sense to tell people they suck. Granted, she is a copy editor (or something) for a living, so I don't expect her to be impressed with amateur fanfic writing. And it was good to talk about what makes a story work (each character having a unique voice, setting up the who-what-where-when and mood right off the bat, the structure of the story, avoiding Hand of God plot devices, using details from canon, get a beta and someone to grammar check, etc.) I just thought the way she did it came across as sorta arrogant and that left a bad taste in my mouth. She wasn't trying to be awful, but I dunno. I think that is part of why I didn't really want to go to any panels - what are you supposed to talk about in front of a group like that?

The dealer's room closed at 3, so I helped pack up the boxes (though I didn't have to help load the van - finally, an advantage to being the girl; the guys got to do that!) We were ready to go at 3:30, while most of the other dealers weren't even close to being done breaking down. I would have left at that point, but I wanted to hang around until 5 PM for mass down the street. So, I thought maybe I'd go read another new manga, but the library was also closed again. So that left the anime, and Hellsing was on. It was...interesting. I don't think I like it. The humor is crude, and they certainly go for shock value. If they were speaking in English rather than Japanese, I think I would have found it more disgusting. Blood splurting everywhere doesn't really bother me, but it was still squicky. But despite that, it was interesting, and some of the humor was great. They were looking up 'Millenium' and they go into this spiel about looking at stuff in the British Museum and finding obscure international orginizations....and then they say, "also, it's the name of a Star Wars fan club in LA," and mention the Millenium Falcon I totally wasn't expecting that, but it was awesome! The audience definitely laughed out loud. So, if there was less groping and talking about hard-ons, I think I'd like it. But as it is...it reminded me of the opening scene of one of the Resident Evil movies, where a girl in a skirt is running up the stairs to escape the zombies and the camera angle lets you see her underwear. Unnecessarily and intentionally crude. It didn't occur to me until afterwards that Alucard is just Dracula backwards. Very clever. But anyway, these episodes must be longer than most, because after the second one, I asked someone for the time and found out I was already late to mass.

So, convention over, I went to my car (still there, yea!) and went to church. I was late...because I was watching Hellsing. No one there knew that, but I did very sheepishly apologize to God for that one. Also, it would be nice if just once the secret agency inside the Vatican weren't antagonistic. That was, I think, my favorite part of the movie Van Helsing ;). Mass was good, and I was reminded yet again that stories put me in touch with the meaning behind words more than other parts of my life do.

Then I drove home. The end :)

OK I am short on time tonight but for xxxHolic it's not fate they are talking about. It's Hitsuzen. It's a self deterministic version of fate sort of. Fate implies outside control and Hitsuzen implies internal control. I tried figuring out the meaning of that word since there is not direct translation and my head nearly exploded. The English word used for Hitsuzen is "Inevitable" and sometimes "Necessary" the word Fate is never used in a translation for Hitsuzen, if that helps any.

Also over time you will realize the importance of the honourifics for Japanese. Particularly -chan which is mostly used when you have close relationship with someone and a person usually has to ask. Also it's used with family. Depending on the context -chan can be used to mean "little" or it can be used to mean "dear". This nuance was particularly used to great effect in a scene in the Bleach anime and Japanese manga where it's basically rape with words. One character called another character -chan when the jerk had no business saying so. In the English dub of the anime he calls the person "Dear Rukia", which is about as close to an equivalent as they are gonna get and I was :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: :scarey: . The forced intimacy of using "Dear" when he wasn't really allowed to in that case implied a whole bunch of things I don't wanna think about. They sort of leave it open in what type of dear he meant but any way a person looks at it, he's sick!!!

This is left out in the Official English translation (leave it to VIZ to screw up a great scene) but preserved in the fan translation of the series.

Here is the wikipedia link with more detail on honourifics. Eventually, you will get used to them.

Hehe, thanks for the help with translations. It is all a bit bewildering. My friend promised not to be scared of my latest obsession, as long as I didn't make any efforts to learn Japanese. I'm not sure why she feels that way, and even she acknowledges that learning Japanese would be a more useful skill than learning Tengwar/Sindarin/Quenya. I think she takes that as a sign of a hard-core anime fan, and she's only comfortable with me dabbling.

But hey, I'm too lazy to learn Japanese. I just want to learn a little, to make more sense of it and understand context and subtext and all of that. So your post certainly helps!

An update: Samurai 7 is available for reasonable prices on e-bay, so I think I will have a copy of my own in a week or so. I liked what I saw in the first 4 episodes, and would like to see the rest of the story.

Hellsing is more involved than I thought, but thanks to the internet, everything is available online for free. What I saw at the convention were the first two OVAs, Hellsing Ultimate I and II. It was pretty hard-core as far as vulgarity goes, and that really turned me off. I mean, the younger Valentine brother in particular was just over-the-top, so the audience laughed at his lines...but I didn't really find him all that funny. I mean, he was over-sexed, even for a young male vampire.

So I went and watched the anime series online, and found that most of that wasn't in there (well, it was toned down, though still not something you would show to a young person). But the story itself was sorta meh and I wasn't impressed. I watched the other two OVAs and realized the storyline was much better. So, I went in search of the manga (since the OVAs are based very closely on the manga), and bingo! I've got something I can stomach. Alucard, Seras Victoria and Integra Hellsing are all very interesting characters, and I love watching them interact. To be honest, I could deal without having Nazis in the story, and I really don't like vilifying the Vatican. Also, there is still some level of gore and vulgarity to it. But the really over-the-top crass parts do not seem to be in the manga, so I can stomach it, I suppose. The humor I liked is very much present. My main complaint now is that people laugh like maniacs in the midst of their duels. So, that's a much more minor complaint.

I've now read up through chapter 19 online, and hope I can find the rest of the chapters. My library system doesn't carry this series, so I doubt I'd be able to read them otherwise.

Well you could try requesting it. There are tons of series I have requested and my library actually orders it in. :D

About anime based on Manga. Usually writers who are not the manga-ka come in to work on the anime. Some times a person can tell (like my sister with Fruits basket, when she never read a page of manga in her life). Usually they ad stupid or nonsensical things to the what was written in the manga. That is why i like to read a series first so that way I know what has been add/changed. Usually the manga-ka has no control over what is done in the anime. (I put up some of my report in the anime styles thread. I will be adding to it later.)

Alright I thought I would bump this thread. I am sorry I have been away for so long (I am working on moving). Currently I am on a download frenzy since I won't be able to download torrents for a while after I move, so I haven't had time to watch much.

I have decided I am going to get a subscription to a rent by mail rental company so I can test out some dvds. I was thinking about going with zip.ca but considering they still have not stocked xxxholic I think I may have to go with Blockbuster.

I was on the verge of finishing Ranma 1/2 with 4 volumes to go and the library does not have them. bawling I filled a purchase order. Maybe I can get them in the new place I move to. For now I decided to give Maison Ikokku a try since it's by the same author.

I have bought volume 4 of Yotsuba& but I had to pack it up so I haven't read it yet. I have downloaded Monster and I would like to try out Homunculus but I don't think it's been licensed in NA and I don't have time to find a scanlation. Has anyone tried Monster? I have heard it's really good.

I have gone crazy on saving images and my portable hard drive only has 50gb left. Also I soon have to change my icon as I have over 1000 icons and I haven't really used them.

Has anyone heard of or seen Chi's sweet home? I have seen up to ep 20 and there was a preview of episodes at the con I went to. The grown man behind me said he doesn't even like cats and yet he likes the show.

(I hear about a lot of different animes now since I listen to 2 podcast on them although I would like more about manga)

OK I thought I would bump this up again. I have now read Yotsuba&! 4 and 5. They are soooo funny. I can't wait until they bring out volume 6.

Tonight I am going to give Code Geass a go. I think I need something to relax me and watching anime helps. I have found the Monster manga at my local comic book store but I will go with the anime first.

I have read up to volume 5 of Maison Ikkoku and it took me a while but I have really gotten into it.

Also I will finish my Anime north report once I finish moving so it looks like next weekend.

I just finished watching Death Note. Very tense and well plot-driven, although there were a few moments where I thought they either dropped the ball or came very close.

I found the first arc the strongest because of the way it sucked you in. I also like the fact that it was a completed story (although, they hint at the possibility of future seasons). The problem with stuff that goes on and on is that it becomes hard to come up with good and plausible ideas to continue (as one hears of frequently with stuff like Bleach and Naruto with "fillers").

When Yagami Light had to deal with the FBI investigator's fiancée, for example, it was very well done--and creepy. The way they handled it made you really feel the tight spot he was in, as if the viewer should identify with him.

Wilma, I've heard good things about Maison Ikkoku, though I've never seen it. A viewer on RT did a comprehensive review of a lot of series and I think this was covered. It's an older series (1980's) that has good recommendations on places like Anime New Network, (which I find is a good resource. They have comprehensive breakdowns of viewer/reader feedback along with well-done best-of and worst-of lists using Bayesian analysis and weighted averages etc. They even have a clever "overrated" and "underrated" list that uses the differential between the unweighted ranking and the weighted ranking.)
