Not exactly the last movies I saw, but I've watched a few movies by the Coen Brothers lately, one of my top 5 directors.

A Serious Man - Eh, this is probably the worst I've seen from them. It has its moments (Sy Ableman is a hoot), but it just seems to be missing something, and the ending literally cuts off with nothing resolved (No Country for Old Men sort of does too, but it works better there).

Inside Llewyn Davis - This is a movie about someone trying to make it as a folk musician in NYC in the early 60s. He's barely getting by with basically no money and struggling just to find a place to sleep at night. This time, though, the "struggling starving artist" character is somewhat of a jerk who alienates everyone who cares about him and just thinks he's a tortured misunderstood genius. He's still somewhat sympathetic, but he really does bring a lot of his troubles on himself. It's almost like a parody of a typical musician movie, including a ridiculous road trip to Chicago and a wild goose chase involving a cat. John Goodman's part is funny as always. Some good music. Clever ending (see spoilers). Overall, a solid mid-tier CoBros movie.

I liked the way they worked Bob Dylan in at the end.
Blood Simple - Their first movie, thought this was fantastic. It's a well-done neo-noir that kept me on the edge of my seat. Very minimalist with a simple but fairly clever storyline. It's slow-paced without much dialog and low-budget, so it won't appeal to everyone, but totally worked for me. The final scene is super intense, with Hitchcock levels of suspense.

Too bad. I would have been interested to hear what it looked like in big screen 3D.

Thanks, Alatar. I've put Guardians on my "definitely see it" list—which means there's about a 30% chance I'll manage it before it leaves theaters. . . .
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

BOTFA trailer was attached to 2-D Guardians. (Mrs. Ax doesn't do 3-D). Will see 3-D Imax version with son, possibly Sunday afternoon, and report if no one else has.

Saw 2D Guardians (and liked it - cross between the original Star Wars, Hitchhiker's Guide and a Pink Floyd laser show).

The BOFA trailer was attached, and it looked like the version I saw online, only bigger. :)

Disney's "A Christmas Carol".
Given how Jim Carrey ruined "Grinch", I expected to dislike this.
Oh boy, I think this is one of the best adaptations of the book I have ever seen. Putting aside the silly chase scene near the end, it captured the image and heart of Dickens' story perfectly.
And I love the fact that they trusted Dickens and used his dialogues to the full.
Scrooge was perfect and Jim Carrey was perfect and the ghost of christmas present was spot on!
One of the best Christmas family films, imo.

Jim Carrey didn't ruin the Grinch. Ron Howard did. :)

Alas, I'm unavailable. But I would love to have a movie-going companion when I am available. My Dad's health is going downhill so I took it upon myself to move in last Tuesday and keep an eye on him. He lives in WC so I can still commute to work. Maybe next week, when my brother takes a shift.

When and where would you go? Drop me a line, maybe we can work it out. :)
I'm sorry to hear your dad's health has worsened.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.
