No, earlier.

Edit: earlier than LOTR.

The Shire was established in around 1601 of the Third Age, so if it was before the events of LOTR and not in the appendices, it must be from the Second Age or earlier, unless it is from Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age (which I doubt). Here is the quote for the new page:

In that case, it is definitely before the establishment of the Shire.

Edit: also earlier than the Second Age, if that helps.

First Age, or before the awakening of the Elves (I think it must be the former but it is worth checking).
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

I believe it's before the awakening of the Elves.

Is the "you" being addressed in the quote one of the Valar?

Is it one Vala addressing another one of the Valar?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Before or after the creation of the Two Trees?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

So, after checking the book, I'm 90% sure that it was spoken before the Two Trees were created.

Is it spoken between Vala who are spouses of each other?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Definitely not.

Unless a tabloid, “tell-all” edition of The Silmarillion comes out sometime…

This is a stretch, but is it Melkor saying to the other Valar: ‘This shall be my own kingdom; and I name it unto myself!’
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

I guess it must be Manwë's response (which does make more sense): Melkor: ‘This kingdom thou shalt not take for thine own, wrongfully, for many others have laboured here no less than thou.’
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

That's the one!

(and it's a useful quote to keep in mind and trot out when needed)

Translation Party is back!

Here is the new quote:

We believe that our hearts are facing west and that we will find light there.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
