‘The Rings of Power’ Officially Renewed for Season 3, Plans Major Time Jump - The Hollywood Reporter

Prime Video has officially confirmed The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for a third season.

The Rings of Power is in preproduction, and filming of the hit fantasy drama will begin this spring at the show’s new production home at Shepperton Studios in the United Kingdom. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the renewal news since the show’s second-season finale aired in October.

The Hollywood Reporter can reveal the show is executing a major time jump going into the new episodes, with Sauron now crafting the iconic One Ring. Here is the exclusive logline: “Jumping forward several years from the events of season 2, season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.”

ROP S2 began filming in October 2022, the same month S1 finished airing, so the delay in news about S3 moving forward was kinda conspicuous. With the start of filming still a couple months away, S3 seems likely to air in 2027

In the grand scheme of the actual Second Age time line, it isn't a major time jump, it is a major time compression, since all of the events continue to take place within a small part of the lifetime of human characters such as Elendil, Míriel and Ar-Pharazôn.

You are, of course, correct that the show's chronology is massively compressed compared to the source material, but honestly, I wasn't really expecting S3 (or other future seasons) to have more of a time gap from their predecessors than there was between S1 and S2, which is to say, almost nothing. Before ROP aired, I thought maybe they'd aim for a GoT-esque one season = one in-universe year model. So I suppose it's a matter of expectations.

No, I don't think so. It is the natural place for the series to pick up, and there is still more than plenty to cover in three more years.

It's good news that it has been made 'official'. That said, the producers had made no secret that they have been working on S3 pre-production since August 2024. Hopefully it won't be years. if Amazon was smart, they'd greenlight S4 and S5 as well just to get the production done. They have character contracts and such, so there would be very little gain to cancel the last two of the planned 5 seasons now going forward anyways.
