Nature Pics
Re: Nature Pics
They look like someone ran out of nice paint before they could get to the head.
Let the other societies take the skilled, the hopefuls, the ambitious, the self-confident. He’d take the whining resentful ones, the ones with a bellyful of spite and bile, the ones who knew they could make it big if only they’d been given the chance. Give him the ones in which the floods of venom and vindictiveness were dammed up behind thin walls of ineptitude and lowgrade paranoia.

Nice! A raven, correct? We don't have those here. I have a family of 4 crows that visit daily for some breakfast though.

Yes, a raven. A relatively small one, though.

Re: Nature Pics
I still to this day have trouble distinguishing between ravens and crows.

Re: Nature Pics
Ravens generally have kind of a humped beak whereas crows have a more typical tapered beak.

I was in Muir Woods on Dec 21st and 25th. Here are some photos of typical weirdness from the forest: Convergent ladybugs, Witch's Butter, Banana slug, Coho Salmon, and Redwood fasciation.

Re: Nature Pics
Such a beautiful place!
Funny story - we were walking in the local botanical garden and passed two girls about college age. They went up a trail, and suddenly, I hear a piercing scream and they come running back down. I am thinking, coyote? bobcat? mountain lion??? In decreasing order of probability but I guess it's not impossible.
It was a banana slug.
At least it's easy to escape from one...

Clearly not UCSC students!
(For those who do not know, the banana slug is the UCSC mascot (as seen in the film Pulp Fiction.)

Re: Nature Pics
The first time one sees a banana slug it is a bit of a shock. Not on the same level as mountain lion, coyote, or bobcat...
Muir woods is a special place. As are many of the parks in your grand state.

The wood ducks don't look real, do they?
As for the banana slugs, how any one could find them scary is beyond me.
