I seem to remember something about the rights reverting if they don't keep them active.

This was already done long ago, right? As a fan-made thing?

Edit: Yes, and WB is evidently taking aggressive take-down action against it.

My understanding (which I have not researched fully) is that this is a whole new licensing agreement that WB/NL entered into with the new rights-holder, Embracer, after the latter purchased the rights from Saul Zaentz' company (whatever it was called at the time).

I'm glad they've restored the fan film, but I'm not sure I buy the "it was a mistake" angle, unless the mistake was "we failed to anticipate the fan response". :V But yeah, the 2009 version was the first thing I thought of. I hope they at least change the working title for this new film.

I know this has been mentioned in other threads, but it might be nice to have one location to discuss.

Good idea. Should I move the other posts to this thread?

Not thrilled with this. I thought War of the Rohirrim was a tasteful way to continue making movies, possibly leading to an animated anthology series about less-known parts of the Third Age. This comes across as just a cash-in - remember the abandoned Hobbit "bridge film"? Admittedly it might be nice to see Serkis in action again though.

It will probably become a culture war icon for really stupid reasons just because it isn't Amazon though.

(In the voice of Gimli talking about Emyn Muil) I rolled my eyes when I heard about this. It has the same ol same ol that butchered Lord of the Rings and bloated The Hobbit on film. To make matters worse, of ALL the many many stories that could be mined out of the appendices, they had to take the lazy route and co-opt a fan-film tale. Lazy I say. Peter Jackson has already flipped us off with his carrot in the Hobbit movies, so I expect this to be even worse. Will I go see it? Yes, probably. Preferably I'll find a free premiere showing to get into like I did with each of the three Hobbit movies. They never got a penny out of me for them.

Sigh . . . more $ as Voronwë stated. We'll see who it stars besides Andy. Yes, I'll attend but I think I would have preferred other options from the Appendix's. I'd love to see one written about Prince Eärnur and the fall of Angmar etc. I think that would have provided a more interesting movie.
The world is indeed full of peril, and in it, there are many dark places; but still, there is much that is fair, and though in all lands, love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.

In this context, I have to appreciate ROP. They made a bold attempt to create a story that was true to Tolkien but also original and suspenseful in itself, with characters that are not pasted from PJ movie canon but that could conceivably evolve into those characters. I think they mostly succeeded, and where I think they missed, I have to respect what they tried.
