Games, Riddles, Puzzles, and other Distractions

Animal #287
I figured it out in 2 guesses!

Again... random chance. First guess landed me in a category so broad, I thought I'd narrow it a bit by picking an insect next. The first three insects I tried weren't in the database... but the next one was the answer! Weird.

I had to play a hunch for today's (I had a group of three and a straggler that could plausibly be the fourth provided a certain thing existed in the world unbeknownst to me, which indeed turned out to be the case).RoseMorninStar wrote: ↑Mon May 13, 2024 5:11 pm Interesting Dave. I have other games where I've played alternatively made games, making the original easier, but connections still gets me sometimes, as it did today.

One Connections+ failure mode is that I see what the author did and am annoyed by it. But there are also ones where I have no idea what the actual frick is going on and just have to assume drugs were involved somehow:

Glad I wasn't the only one who struggled, though once I got there, I was pretty sure I wouldn't be.
I play on hard mode, which I think is something of a misnomer, since it actually makes it substantially more difficult to fail as long as you don't give up. In fact, it would be an interesting twist on the game to try to come up with a non-repeating hard mode fail sequence for the day's word.

I didn't like hard mode because, not always but often, reduces the game to one of whack-a-mole.

The more I think about it, the more I think they named the modes backwards. You have a far larger set of alternatives to choose among in "easy" mode, and that very nearly matches the technical definition of a "hard" problem...

I think Strands will be a tough one for many people today.
For Connections I got the green & yellow just fine, but the blue & purple were a nope.

Just for a change of pace - I found this way too easy, but how did you do?

I'm pretty sure I've heard every one of those pieces (daughter was in ballet & also played violin in the school orchestra). I knew the title of a good many of them but I got very few of the composers. That's pretty sad. I imagine I would do much better on something similar but with art. At least I would hope so!

I have multiple beefs with today's connections. I discerned all four categories, but all but the yellow consisted of three good candidates and one misfit. Did the regular person take the day off or something??

Oh, and

, so I suppose I'm unhappy with yellow too. It really irks me when a puzzle rejects a valid answer for no better reason than "it's not the one we had in mind."Re: Games, Riddles, Puzzles, and other Distractions
