It's really a wonderful thing, to set aside parklands for people (and wildlife) to enjoy. I'm grateful for those who were forward thinking enough to realize it is a treasure to be cherished (by all).

In the case of most parks, the forward thinkers were, for the most part, heads of timber companies who decided to set aside the last 1% of their old growth forests, after stripping the rest. :( In the case of Sam P Taylor park, the State took over this second growth redwood forest land for non payment of taxes.

I guess I was thinking of Presidents, etc.. who set aside land and promoted the idea; California's Yosemite was approved by Lincoln (to be a state park), Grant approved Yellowstone, our first 'National' park. Later Congress established other national parks, Mount Rainer, Glacier, Yosemite. Theodore Roosevelt especially saw parks as a means of conservation for the public and not leaving lands (as it had been) for the economic benefit of entrepreneurs. The Antiquities Act of 1906 secured 18 national monuments; Devil's tower, Petrified forest, the Grand canyon, among others. Roosevelt established 150 National forests, 51 bird preserves, 4 game preserves. Those same years 5 more National parks were established, among them, Crater lake, Wind Cave, Mesa Verde. I've been to a good deal of the National parks and a great many of the monuments. Our country would be poorer without them.

How lovely! Especially with snow on the ground (jealous here in Maryland, where it's only cold with no pretty precipitation to make up for it :P).

Beautiful, Rose. (I won't say what the weather is like here today.)

I love that blue light. Yeah, I probably don't want to know how lovely it is in California. The wind is still howling here and it's very, very cold.

Eldy.. I don't know whether to wish you snow or not. It can be pretty, but overall I'm not a huge fan. :D I'm a sun-lover. I don't mind a bit of winter because it does make me appreciate the seasons and the cycle of life, 'little death', and renewal, but the winters here are just so very long and generally so very cold. We have to find beauty where we can. :)

I think there's a good chance I would feel similarly if I lived north of the mid-Atlantic states. :D

What a great heron!
His philosophy was a mixture of three famous schools -- the Cynics, the Stoics and the Epicureans -- and summed up all three of them in his famous phrase, 'You can't trust any bugger further than you can throw him, and there's nothing you can do about it, so let's have a drink."

Nice!

Also, since I missed replying to this when you asked a few months ago (and only just noticed when clicking the little arrow to go back and see my quoted post in context), I have indeed noticed and enjoyed your avatar/signature synchronization. :)
