Inanna, have you considered joining the Brooklyn Public Library? It's digital library is open for remote membership if you live in any US state - and you live next door, just about. It's fantastic - it costs $50 a year in membership but so worth it! I've saved around $500 in book purchases (89 titles borrowed that I would otherwise have purchased) since joining earlier this year. I haven't found all the titles I've sought but rhe vast majority.

Has anyone read the Perry Rhodan series? I just found out this week that it is considered the epitome of the space opera genre, and I'd never even heard of it before.

It's a German series of "space opera" novels that has been continued by different authors since the early 1960s. I've been a science fiction fan almost my whole life, so you think I'd have run across this series before but I haven't. So, I ordered the first one in actual paper format (!) and am waiting for it to arrive.

I'd prefer to listen to an audio book, but that isn't an option in the translated version.

Maria, I'll be very interested to read your assessment of it. I've never heard of it either. I'm a little dubious about a never-ending series written by consecutive authors but willing to give it a go, pending your review.

My initial assessment: the book is almost too fragile to read. It was printed in 1969 and the pages are yellowed to the point of being orange. I'm afraid to open the book more than a few degrees because all those pages are going to fall out if I do. I'm going to have to hold the spine closed with my fingertips as I go, I think. Or maybe put binder clips on the back of the book.

I believe the Amazon Prime Deal or Book of the day or something for America is The Gutter Prayer by Gareth Hanrahan. Well worth picking up.

Today I learned that What Do You Say to a Naked Elf? is a real book title, written by Cheryl Sterling. The description doesn't sound half bad, actually.

A more conventional subject matter, but also a great title I Swear, Politics Is Messier Than My Minivan by Katie Porter is just about the only book by a politician I'd consider buying. Porter is a CA Rep who is running for Senate, and I would love to see her run for President one day.

This is her during the Speaker vote debacle.
