A thought struck me. Should Roe v Wade actually be overturned, what will be the big rallying cry for the religious right? They've already lost the fight when it comes to what people do with their genitals. Does critical race theory (aka grad level social studies) have the staying power or will they lose their foil if they get their desired results in the Supreme Court?

River, I've long thought some on the political right really don't want Roe overturned (although they will say they do) because it's such an easy way to rally single issue voters. However, the last 4-5 years have been proof enough that truth/reality isn't what matters.

How did this happen?

Texas bans most abortions: U.S. Supreme Court yet to take action on emergency appeal
A Texas ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy took effect on Wednesday after the U.S. Supreme Court did not act on a request by abortion rights groups to block the law, which would prohibit the vast majority of abortions in the state.

Abortion providers worked until almost the midnight deadline, when the court's inaction allowed the most restrictive ban in the country to be enforced while litigation continues in the groups' lawsuit challenging its constitutionality.

The law amounts to a near-total ban on abortion procedures given that 85 per cent to 90 per cent of abortions occur after six weeks of pregnancy, and would likely force many clinics to close, the groups said.
But it gets worse...
The law, signed on May 19, is unusual in that it gives private citizens the power to enforce it by enabling them to sue abortion providers and anyone who "aids or abets" an abortion after six weeks. Citizens who win such lawsuits would be entitled to at least $10,000.

Abortion providers say the law could lead to hundreds of costly lawsuits that would be logistically difficult to defend.
Doesn't that give random people incentive to turn in anyone involved (including people that just drive the woman to the appointment) in the interest of getting a quick buck?

Yes. That's the point.

Limit yourself to two major political parties. Make one weak and incompetent, and the other fascist. Watch what happens.

What I find particularly frustrating and bizarre is that it is often those who refuse to wear a mask or get vaccinated because 'their freedoms/you can't tell me what to do with my body/my choice' are the ones most often pushing for such laws for other people.

Yeah. Or as one wag put it:
REPUBLICANS: "Everything the Left does is like 1984!"

ALSO REPUBLICANS: "Remember to watch your neighbors for illegal use of their bodies. You will be rewarded by the state if you report them."

Wag!
noun: wag; plural noun: wags
1. a person who makes jokes; a joker.
"one wag shouted, ‘On that count you've got about three supporters!’"
Similar: joker, jester, wit, humorist, comic, comedian, comedienne
- - - - - - - - - -
But to get serious: tonight, by a 5-4 margin, wtih Chief Justice John Roberts joinging the three liberals, the Supreme Court has declined to block this law.

Some would say that this effectively, if perhaps temporarily, overturns Roe v. Wade in the state of Texas.

Will Susan Colllins take back her vote for Justice Kavanaugh?

And there's no exception for rape or incest.

Someone who is forced to give birth to her rapist's child as a result should sue the conservative Supreme Court judges for assault.

Am I correctly understanding that under this new law a man who rapes a woman will now be paid $10,000 by the state if he prevents her from getting an abortion?

I don't see what's to stop him.

6 weeks, just to be clear, is counted from the start of the last menstrual period before conception. It is on average two weeks before the conception occurs, but could be as many as four, depending on individual cycle. Practically no one, even women who are actively trying to conceive, knows they are pregnant at the 6 week point.

And it creates a nightmare for every woman who has a miscarriage, as she can be suspected of terminating her pregnancy. That's practically every woman capable of conceiving. Not to mention that post-miscarriage care often requires D&C, which can also put the woman at risk of being suspected of therapeutic abortion.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Ah, I have learned that Texas Democrats did manage to get an exclusion for this particular possibility. The rapist himself cannot turn in his victim to the state.

But his best friend could do so and then split the cash with him.
