Re: New Reversible Editions of HoME

Interesting! These look like really nice editions. :) I was wondering if the John Howe art for them would be new, but then I recognised the spine of The Book of Lost Tales, Part One as part of Howe's Morgoth's Forces before Gondolin . This has been previously used on the cover of some paperback edit...

Re: 49 Years On (Now 50)

Christopher is listed separately from the "Tolkien Copyright Trust" (which may or may not be the same thing as the Tolkien Trust, a registered charity in the UK) on the copyright page of many editions of The Silmarillion , UT , and HoMe , so I assume that he is indeed considered a co-autho...

Re: The 4K Release of Lord of the RIngs and The Hobbit

Apparently there will be the original trailer that was shown at Cannes and hasn't been seen since then. Someone on TORn recently posted a link to the Cannes preview reel, which I hadn't seen before. I really enjoyed watching it and noticing the little differences from (what I recall of) the finishe...

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)

(Compulsively fixing BB Code formatting because I'm like that.) Thanks for this! There were some extra details revealed following this leak, in the subsequent AMA on the FoF Discord: That Calam Lynch is playing Celeborn has been known to FoF for months and has been confirmed by multiple sources. Lyn...

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)

It would also be great if Celebrimbor's personality was actually developed (like actually giving him one).
Hey, it's a tradition now for the first installment of a major Tolkien adaptation to feature a personality-deficient Elvish character whose name begins with Celeb-. :D

Good points! I agree it's not conclusive, but you make a convincing case for the gems comment occurring at the 2851 meeting, given Saruman would presumably be less forthcoming with information later on. Thanks for giving me more to think about! :)

Re: The Shadow of the Past - Gandalf's knowledge

So from 2851, when the White Council met, and Saruman revealed the information about the gems, it was 150 years until Gandalf recalled those words again. He didn't recall them until Bilbo's long life started to raise suspicions in 3001. In fact, from the White Council in 2851 until Bilbo comes back...

Re: The Shadow of the Past - Gandalf's knowledge

Per Appendix B, the Wise began to fear the master of Dol Guldur was Sauron as early as III.2060 and Gandalf confirmed this was the case in III.2850, about ninety years before the White Council assaulted Dol Guldur and Sauron fled.

Re: Another "new" Tolkien book

Hi, V! I usually cite the Letters by letter number, not page number, so I definitely hope that they don't redo everything. I've wondered before if they might distinguish them by appending letters to the original numbers—e.g., an addition that dates to between Letter 101 and Letter 102 might b...

Re: The Shadow of the Past - Gandalf's knowledge

Hi, Halifirien, welcome to HoF! :) I'm afraid I don't have an explanation for you. I'd actually forgotten about Gandalf's comment in chapter I.2 that Bilbo's ring was clearly a Great Ring—I suppose I'd been infected by the brainworm that is the "lesser ring theory" you mention. In my defen...

Not a 'new' book, per se, but huge news nonetheless. The Letters of J. R. R. Re: Another "new" Tolkien book

Glad you liked it, Al! Likewise, I'm glad you enjoyed it, Al. So does it have a continuous narrative with no gaps? (I may have asked this before, but I can't remember) There are separate chapters (which vary wildly in length) for every year of the Second Age that has an entry in the timeline found ...

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)

The usually but not always reliable Fellowship of Fans claims to have confirmation that there will be "two different Sauron character forms" in S2, indicating ROP will be utilizing Sauron's shapeshifting abilities.
