Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!

Is it Aragorn speaking to Arwen? "Behold! we are not bound for ever to the circles of the world, and beyond them is more than memory. Farewell!"

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!

Was the original quote referring to the Ring?

Re: I was born in...

My first order was the hardcover editions of volumes X-XII of The History of Middle-earth in early 2008. Apparently I paid for it with a gift card which I assume was a Christmas present from one of my aunts or uncles who had given up on trying to find non-book gifts (I'm sure I wasn't an easy kid to...

Re: Trump's America

It's certainly not my intention to argue for boundless executive authority, but I'm not wholly opposed to executive orders. If anything, I think they have a firmer constitutional basis than the regulatory powers of independent federal agencies (cf. J. W. Hampton, Jr. & Co. v. United States ); bo...

Re: Trump's America

If Trump were to take a stance against sweeping executive orders and the so-called imperial presidency as a general concept then I might agree with him (though it feels really weird to type those words), but since the system has evolved the way it has and shows little sign of changing I think it's l...

You've got it, Voronwë.

(I've grown rather attached to the nickname over the years; thanks!)

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!

Thanks Alatar! When I first picked this username back when I was 14 the similarity was mostly unintentional (my initial guess at how to translate the name I wanted was slightly different), but most people shorten it to Eldo in any event. :) Here's the next quote: We spoke into Eä was conceived witho...

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!

Is it Balin in TH (ch. 11)? “The mountain’s sides were green with woods and all the sheltered valley rich and pleasant in the days when the bells rang in that town.”

Re: Musicals and Operas

I lucked into seeing The Book of Mormon at the last minute when a friend and I drove down to enter the daily lottery for some of the cheap seats. I knew next to nothing about it going in but it was a really good time.

Re: Ed Sheeran

I've heard a little bit of Ed Sheeran on the radio over the years and briefly sought out some of his stuff on my own after he recorded the end credits song for The Desolation of Smaug , but ultimately I've heard very little of his stuff so I'm really enjoying listening to the songs in this thread. T...

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

Bummer about Witch's Flower I thought I've been looking forward to seeing that one. Still planning to see it if it comes to theaters here. Hopefully I will feel a little different. By all means still see it; I certainly don't begrudge anyone else their enjoyment of films and I enjoy hearing other p...

That's very cool! All the reviews of the West End version that I've read have been really positive.

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

I was wondering about that movie. I came across a preview and it was beautiful. It is a gorgeous movie to look at both in terms of art and technical animation, and that alone can sometimes be worth the price of admission for me. :) The opening sequence in particular has fantastic flight and action ...

Re: Musicals and Operas

I went through a period a couple years ago where I was utterly obsessed with Hamilton and listened to the cast album on a weekly basis for about two months, but seeing it was never really a plausible option for me. However, it was recently announced that the touring version will play at the Hippodro...

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

The most recent movie I saw was the one-day-only theatrical release of Mary and the Witch's Flower , which is the debut film from Studio Ponoc, an anime studio set up by some of the younger generation from Studio Ghibli after the latter (temporarily, as it turned out) shut down their production divi...

Re: Lord of the Rings series!?

I can't find it now, argh, but the other day I read an article on one of the geek news sites quoting one source as saying that the TV rights do not include all of the LotR characters and situations, and so it would not be possible simply to remake the entire tale. I haven't heard the same thing any...

Re: Lord of the Rings series!?

Thanks for looking into the matter, Voronwë. I hope that the Estate will issue a clarifying statement just to be sure, but it's good to have more of a basis for my hunch that this is a misreporting issue.

Ah, thanks for the reminder, Voronwë. I don't know if you're legally allowed to share quotes from the contract but I'd love to hear whatever it is you can confirm from it!
