But the difference with all of the those prophesies, S'wiz, is that they are all described in the "histories" as having come true. In the case of the Second Prophecy of Mandos, it is specifically described by Tolkien as being a Numenorian myth, and specifically distinguished from "Elv...

It is supposition and supposition can often be wrong. Or, in other words (as I said before), it is hopeful mythology. That's my point exactly. The Second Prophecy is not meant to be taken as Truth, as what really happens (or rather, what really will happen). It is not "Elvish history"; it...

Correct you? YOU? I would never think of it. You do raise some interesting ideas that I haven't really considered before (again!). Now that you mention it, it does make sense that Arda Healed would not be constrained by the space/time continuum, though I don't think that Tolkien actually says that a...

An interesting tidbit that I just learned is that the Quran that Rep. Ellison used for his swearing in was once owned by Thomas Jefferson. Ellison said "he chose to use this Quran because it showed that a visionary like Jefferson believed that wisdom could be gleaned from many sources". We...

Amazon has cut the price of the regular edition from $26 to $17.94, and of the "deluxe edition" from $100 to $63. Still no more information about what the difference is. Still no cover images available. I'm a little bit more tempted to order the deluxe edition, but I'm still not quite read...

Specifically, the part about the sale of Ruth funding No, No, Nanette.

Faramond, I agree that it is possible for a lower revenue team to win the World Series. After all, a team that won only 83 games in the regular season won last year. Still, the deck is significantly stacked.

BTW One of your links is bad. The thumbnail of you two on horses goes to the same picture as the thumbnail above.
Thanks, Brian. It's fixed now. If anyone else spots any problems, please let me know.

I can definitely understand wanting to retire there.

The Giants haven't won the series since 1954, and never have in San Francisco. And let's not even talk about the Cubbies. Tom, I agree that the system is broken. But was it any different in the earlier days when the Yankees dominated? I'd be curious to see comparative salaries in the days of the ori...

The Infinite Mercy of God

The one book that I read while I was on vacation was Anne Rice's Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt, which Whistler mentioned some time ago. I actually enjoyed the book very much; I think it gives a fascinating portrait of Jewish life 2000 years ago (it seems very authentic to me, and Rice is known for h...

I'm glad ya'll enjoyed it (and that I got the stamp of approval of our resident photographers :)). So you stayed in that cottage all the time and drove to various places, right? Sounds cool, should be more reasonable than a hotel, too. How do you find out about such places?? Yup, that's what we did....

I'm following this discussion with interest, but I'm finding that I don't have anything useful to say about free will that doesn't involve Ilúvatar, Morgoth, Fëanor or Túrin.
