Re: The Middle-earth 1200

This arguably best fits in here but please move if necessary: 1.) Can you name the top 30 characters mentioned in JRR Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'? ( https://www.sporcle.com/games/Waterice_Man/the-hobbit-top-30 ) 2.) Can you name the 50 most mentioned characters in the Lord of the Rings trilogy? ( https:/...

Peter Jackson involved in the series

According to the German IGN website, Peter Jackson will be somewhat involved in, presumably, the initial stages of the upcoming series. The editors had a phone call with Jackson in which he said the following: "Ich hatte diesbezüglich ein Telefonat mit Amazon – ich glaube, das war vor gut einem...

Re: Lord of the Rings series!?

One more positive point: this could indicate that we have here at our hands an anthology series which would serve the source material well and would open up room for more noticeable qualitative improvements in later seasons. Who knows...

Re: Lord of the Rings series!?

The unrealistic hope should be to expect not merely an entertaining series but something that has some kind of artistic merit as an adaptation. Otherwise what is the point...apart from feeding dull, undemanding TV junk food to the gluttonous consumer? The latest news, while short to say the least, d...

Re: Lord of the Rings series!?

"Mixed race", "non-white" or "white" are rather anachronistic and utterly reductionist terms for Middle-earth (and the real world). The magnitude of phenotypic differences in humans simply cannot be grasped through the limited, nationalistic prism of the contemporary U....

Re: Ed Sheeran

Beutlin, if it's filmed in the Tyrol, how come the car has the steering wheel on the right? Good catch. That said, the car drives on the right. Most simple explanation would be that they shot the interior scene of the car in Britain and simply forgot about it in post-production. Of course, it could...

@Alatar: Sheeran will give an exclusive concert for 200 people in the area where the video was filmed on 15 December 2017 (https://www.zillertal.at/en/tips/winter/skiareas/videodreh-ed-sheeran.html). You cannot buy a ticket for the concert but with some luck you can win two tickets (info in the link...

Re: Ed Sheeran

Filmed on some glacier in the Tyrol, one of the Western states of my country. ^^

Sheeran does not really make my kind of music but I have to admit he is really good at what he does (and not just from a commercial perspective).

Re: Christian Music

@Frelga: entsprungen literally means "has sprung up" or better "arisen". The whole title of the Carol literally translates as "a rose has sprung up" (I realize, of course that your comment was meant as a joke ^^. Curiously, I think the Ents would have liked or at least ...

Re: Saint Tolkien?

Incorruptibility of the body is not a requirement for sainthood, nor is it canonical proof for a person's sainthood. In most cases, at least two miracles are required for sainthood, and one miracle for beatification (to oversimplify a little bit, the stage before sainthood). The Catholic canonizatio...

Re: Saint Tolkien?

"Saint John of Oxford?" might be a more fitting title to this thread.

The linked website at least reads rather like the work of only superficially practicing but overly-enthusiastic Middle-earth fans, as opposed to one of devout Catholics.

Re: IMDB Top 250 films

Nothing against your quantitative-analysis efforts, but I would be more interested in your qualitative final verdict: a.) What movies surprised you and why? b.) What movies did you especially dislike and are there any general patterns connecting them? (I believe you mentioned something about gangste...

Re: Lord of the Rings series!?

Those cryptic Twitter posts at least very much indicate that we will get a series set in the late Third Age. It seems I just have to swap out the dwarf character in my fake press release for Bombadil. All in all, this sounds bad and deeply unoriginal. Amazon will probably produce some direct prelude...

Re: Gun Control Debate

Oh, I am primarily referring here to the historical roots of said American views that government should have very limited powers, which are not so much rooted in libertarianism (a movement which from a conceptual perspective really only begins to take form after WWII) but eighteenth-century liberali...

Re: Gun Control Debate

The general idea that gov't should have very limited, specific powers and outside of that, should not be involved in people's lives. While the idea of a limited government is nowadays mostly or primarily associated with libertarianism, I would not equate the two. If one follows the Wikipedia defini...

Re: Lord of the Rings series!?

That is interesting news indeed, and (as most of you have probably already guessed) it now seems possible that the Amazon deal only could have come to fruition after Christopher Tolkien's resignation (and what that means concerning the nature and the scope of the rights which were acquired by Amazon...

Re: Lord of the Rings series!?

V, if I sounded too optimistic in my previous post, I assure you that this was not my intention. ^^ Overall, I am rather pessimistic about this whole endeavor and would have preferred for a longer pause between Middle-earth adaptations. Given the current mainstream film and the TV market, and more i...

Re: Lord of the Rings series!?

Quite surprised that they already released an official statement. So it seems they are going for scenario #3 (from all the options I mentioned above). I am still not ruling out a Númenor or Silmarillion series however. For an avid reader of Tolkien's works, the phrase "new storylines preceding ...
