Re: Discussion about the Discussion about RoP
Even though this is about Sandman, I'll share it here because I think the sentiments fit perfectly https://theconversation.com/the-sandman-a-masterclass-in-unfaithful-adaptation-190110 That article also repeats the favoured revisionist argument back on TORC, essentially films and books are differen...

Re: Rings of Power musical score
I've only heard the music in the show itself and not listened to it separately yet. I love the main theme which seems to me to be a natural progression by Shore from the music of the films. However some of the incidental music reminds me more of John Willams and Star Wars which I find a bit jarring:...

The Indy is usually reaosnably reliable. It looks very much like the policeman not knowing the law.

Re: The Passing of Queen Elizabeth II
Can this be true? We expect Russia to do this, but the UK? https://twitter.com/paulpowlesland/status/1569350005462564865?s=19 Or possibly a policeman who doesn't understand the law. It happens. Or perhaps even made up. That happens too. There is not nine days of the Queen's holiday or funeral. Ever...

Re: The Passing of Queen Elizabeth II
I second what Alatar said. It seems like the Tower will be open except on the 19th. St Paul's is only open for services, as it would seem is Wesminster Abbey. Your daughter will still be able to see the exteriors, although it will be really busy around there. The lying in state is taking place in We...

Re: Tolkien Quote “Touching your cap to the squire may be damn b
Yes, although I meant its not being used to add any moral connotation. Tolkien's quote it is about pride and humility, pride being the worst sin, being that of Satan. It's bad for the squire because it may promote pride, but good for you because it promotes humility. The Sharpe quote is merely a sub...

Re: The Passing of Queen Elizabeth II
Rose,
The Historic Royal Palaces site say they will only be shut on the 19th the day of the Funeral, so Hamton Court is another option to visit.
What sort of things does your daughter like? I'm in the UK an while I don't really know Edinburgh I do know London and its environs.

Does anyone else find the episodes too long? I haven't watched any of them in one sitting.

Having seen the most recent episode, whoever he is, I don't think he's Sauron.

Re: The Passing of Queen Elizabeth II
I was watching the meeting of the Privy Council and was sttuck by how much of it was pure admn work. Even hje King looked bored, It's made up of ex officio politicians and others, such as senior judges. That's why, om this occasion, all the living PMs were there. It's a shame it's fodder for the con...

. But he says it's "damn bad for the squire". Not being British I can't speak to whether this was some kind of well known idiom or not. I have heard it before, though, in a way. In the first (tv show) episode of Sharpe, there's a line "You've done me a damn good turn. Now I'm going t...

I'm glad to hear that Aravar. Perhaps she's just having a string of bad luck/poor timing. She's just finishing 3 weeks working on a project in the UK and plans to holiday a in Edinburgh, then London. The keys to her flat rental never arrived (they are blaming it on the mail strike, which didn't mak...

Re: World News Thread
End of an era indeed. May she rest in peace. Our daughter is in the UK right now. There are huge strikes going on (trash collection, mail, trains, etc..) and everything is just chaos. I can only imagine this will add to the chaos. Everything is not Chaos in the Uk. The train strikes are at best an ...

So, this is one for those who enjoy an Expanded Universe, or "fan fiction" if you prefer. https://www.humblebundle.com/books/lord-of-the-rings-5e-books These are all the source books for the LotR RPG, but as well as rules for playing the game there's a wealth of resources for, say, tellin...

Re: Spoilerish reviews of Episodes 1 and 2
I think the point of the raft scene was to have a shot that echoed Frodo saving Sam from drowning at the end of FOTR, when Galadriel was rescued.

Re: Spoilerish reviews of Episodes 1 and 2
I saw the first two yesterday. A few thoughts. I agree with Alatar's Tolkien adjacent. Visually it was great. Howver I wash there was a bit more variation in style among elven cities. My problem with it is that it was too Dungeons and Dragons. I say that as someone who has played D & D since 198...

Oh, and she privatized the railroads. Worst Decision Ever. No. She. Did Not That was done under John Major and she was, IIRC, not in favour herself. As a regular user of the railways both pre and post privatisation my own view is that they have improved, albeit not very much. Certainly the quality ...

I saw it last night, 2D only, and pretty much agree with Alatar's [or should it now be He Who Cannot Be Named For Copyright Reasons?] review. While The Hobbit has never held the place in my heart that LOTR has, there were far fewer things that niggled me than any of the LOTR films. I didn't find Rad...

Nor is good and ill one thing for Americans, and another thing for Europeans. It is for us, and SCOTUS justices more than anyone, to discern what is good and what is ill. If they find examples in foreign decisions that help them make that determination, more power to them, so long as they don't abr...
