Re: The Common Tongue and Latin
(part 2) PART (4).jpg PART (5).jpg PART (6).jpg I think it does answer it thanks. Cool how this happened the same day. Maybe you were meant to ask this question, and elengil was meant to come across this description of Tolkien's linguistic shenanigans the same day so that she could answer the quest...

Re: Relics in Middel-Earth
Speaking of the Barrows, the blades that Aragorn gives to the Hobbits that were made by his forebears are important relics, particularly the one that Merry used to help destroy the Witchking! My uncle hates that was left out of the movies. Any of our discussions on Tolkien that and what they did to...

Re: Relics in Middel-Earth
There are a number of items that could be called "relics" in Túrin's story, beginning with the Elvish knife that his father gives him when he is a child, and which he in turn gifted to Sador Labadal. Then there is the Dragon-Helm which was an heirloom of his family and followed him to Dor...

Re: Relics in Middel-Earth
Well, they keep recycling their relics. The Sword the Was Broken is reforged, the Tree blooms again. And I just remembered that in the book, instead of reverently keeping the shards on the plinth, Aragorn the Drama King was apparently doing his Ranger thing with the broken sword. That kind of attit...

The Common Tongue and Latin
I am not a student of Latin, but is there any similarity to the "common tongue" used in LOTR and Latin in the medieval west?

Relics in Middel-Earth
So I was thinking about what kind of relics do we see in middle-earth. Objects that are held in high honor and perhaps even contain powers or inspire those who hold them or are near them. Perhaps the shards of Narsil or the white tree of Gondor, or Gimli strand of Galadriel’s hair. I would love to h...

Re: Christopher John Reuel Tolkien
My obsession with J.r.r would not be what it is without Christopher. I always said one of the first people I want to talk with in heaven is J.R.R Tolkien and C.S lewis. I think Christopher might not be to far down the list. Was this the last living Inkling?

Re: The Environmental Vision of J.R.R Tolkien
I definitely second that! Dickerson's book is wonderful. Perhaps the thing I loved best about Tolkien is his love of nature in a way constant with Christianity. In fact Christianity was the justification for his "environmental vision." The authors book on Lewis is good as well. I watched ...

Re: War of the Ring Grand Strategy LOTR Board Game
I have been playing war of the ring online, it has been amazing. All you need to do is buy tabletop simulator through steam and you can play a virtual board game version online. Highly recommend it.

Re: "One long saga of the Jewels and the Rings"
I keep coming back to Tolkien's statement "that the Silmarillion etc. and The Lord of the Rings went together, as one long Saga of the Jewels and the Rings, and that I was resolved to treat them as one thing" (Letter 126). It seems to me (assuming that the statement in the Variety report ...
