Thanks, N.E.B.! I don't think that description was there when I first went to the page. Or maybe I just didn't see it!

Hopefully, over time, the Obama administration's broader strategy (including the appointment of Richard Holbrooke as special envoy, which I understand has gotten mixed reviews in South Asia) will result in better cooperation with the Pakistani government, less need for unilateral attacks, and most o...

I have no problem at all with listing the names, but I am inclined to agree with Faramond that publishing the addresses (and mapping exactly how to find them) serves no purpose other than facillitating harassment. Faramond, I don't know off-hand of any cases addressing people distributing maps showi...

Primula Baggins wrote:How can he have a character arc when the whole story happened decades ago? :D Unless he has one of those terrible "At last I understand what it all meant!" moments.
You mean one of those "I think at last we understand each other, Frodo Baggins" moments? 8)

The parties in the case have apparently agreed on a mediator, and are tentatively scheduled to hold the mediation in mid-March or April. However, I would not be at all surprised if that get's put back a while.

What's really amazing is how much of the language remained relatively unchanged, even when the significance of what was being said changed mightily.

Difficult to give a clearcut answer to that question, because he moved around so much, and vacillated between having Trotter/Strider by a Hobbit or a Man (and a one point, a disguised elf). But he wrote drafts of material all the way into Moria with Trotter being a hobbit (with Peregrin Boffin being...

I am unlikely to be able to watch it on television, for the same reason that I don't watch anything on television - I don't have one (or at least one that is connected to the outside world). I think public interest in knowing who donated to Prop 8 outweighs the invasion of privacy, but it is a close...

Dear nel, this going to come across as perhaps sounding a little snarky, but I know you know me well enough to know I don't mean it that way. The only way you are going to be able to keep up with all the news would be for you to quit your job and find one less demanding of your time, and abandon you...

Of course it's okay. It's more than okay. It's great. :)

And I envy you that you can remember that much of your first reading. Mine seems to be lost in the mysts of time.

Anyone got 250 pounds (about $361) to spare? That's how much Harper Collins is asking for the limited, signed edition of The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún . We do at least have an official release date: 5/5/09. No word about an American edition, though. http://www.harpercollins.co.uk/Contents/Title/Pa...

That's the fundamental problem, right there. I just don't see how making a film that is half the ending of The Hobbit and half bridge material doesn't come across as cobbled together.

Feingold actually announced his constitutional amendment last week, before the Gregg appointment was even known about. It was in response to the Illinois, New York and Deleware situations, not New Hampshire. There was even an interview with him on NPR. Here's a Jan. 27 news article: Feingold Seeks C...

rwhen, I think you make an excellent point about the differences in expectations. I think must of us long-time Tolkien fans were really skeptical about the prospect of films made from LOTR. Then when FOTR literally knocked our socks off, our expectations suddenly went sky-high. Certainly there are o...

Hi Cerin; nice to see you here again. I'm really shocked to see this erroneous idea put forward. A bill passes the Senate by a simple majority. This last term, Republicans abused the power of the filibuster in an unprecedented fashion to block all legislation, and it seems that this is now regarded ...
