What has led you to believe this is a predominantly American problem and not a global problem?

Re: Discussion about the Discussion about RoP

Y'know, I realized on the way to work I've actually missed the point entirely here: DISNEY remade Disney's The Little Mermaid with a Black actress. A "black" studio did not come and take Disney's The Little Mermaid and remake it with a Black actress. Why did Disney do it? Presumably becaus...

Re: Discussion about the Discussion about RoP

The point of 'Hamilton' is to re-imagine history. In Miranda's words: "America then, as told by America now," as the author/actor/composer sees it. 'Roots' is about slavery and 'race' (as in skin color) is integral to the story and history of enslavement. Try re-imagining that and swappin...

Re: Discussion about the Discussion about RoP

I can't agree that 100 years of history of discrimination was somehow nullified in the last few years because of a few movies that cast POC actors where a white actor might have been cast before. I can't agree that a few token POC actors being cast in roles not specifically noted as white somehow e...

Re: Discussion about the Discussion about RoP

Sigh. I can tell this is going to be a pointless conversation if we can't even agree that equality means equality. Perhaps we can't because we fundamentally disagree on what constitutes equality. I can't agree that 100 years of history of discrimination was somehow nullified in the last few years b...

Re: Discussion about the Discussion about RoP

I'm sorry I couldn't provide up to the minute movie examples as I largely don't watch movies any longer and I don't exactly make a point of going out and searching for these, this is just what I've come across over the years. And it's not just 'Hollywood' - Most western society has been this way, Ho...

Re: Discussion about the Discussion about RoP

I think a lot of the problem with colour blind casting is that it only goes one way? We can cast POC as Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, Valerians, Eliza Doolittle, Ariel and anything else, but we can't have a White Hamilton, or T'challa, or indeed even put on a production of "In the Heights" or ...

Re: Lord of the Rings series!?

I'm biased here, in that I vastly prefer the idea of Gil-galad as an Arafinwean, Absolutely agree! For several reasons - First because it creates a very appealing symmetry with an Arafinwean as High King in Middle-earth while Arafin himself is High King in Valinor Second because he's the brother wh...

Re: The Russia Investigations and other Trump-related cases

Here is what always baffles me about these kinds of articles (not the article itself, just the information in them) Trump exaggerated the square footage of his triplex apartment in Trump Tower, claiming it was 30,000 square feet rather than its actual size of 11,000 square feet, and therefore should...

Re: Discussion about the Discussion about RoP

To use a different example. Imagine we are remaking Crouching Tiger still set in the mythical ages of China. Casting Idris Elba, Indira Varma and Daisy Ridley to play the three main characters would IMO be absurd. Something Hollywood has been doing for as long as it's been making movies - except al...

Re: Discussion about the Discussion about RoP

I knew what you meant. Men (i.e. Humans) can be somewhat stratified by color, sure. No reason to assume modern racial categories apply in middle-earth, but sure, let's assume that. There is zero reason to assume Elves and Dwarves must also be, especially since they did not spread out as Men did, tha...

Re: Discussion about the Discussion about RoP

The same with the dwarves, who all migrated from the far East. Disa is a perfectly plausible character as is. Except that being "white" is simply treated as the default, because if you're not, it's pointed out. Everyone migrated from the far East before there was an equator. By that logic...

Re: Discussion about the Discussion about RoP

But equally there are those on the right who would say that popular properties are being used in an orchestrated effort to drive people left politically, to pursue a globalist agenda. It works both ways. It is, I think, naive to say that the right is "orchestrating" campaigns when Disney ...

Re: Trump Espionage and Obstruction Investigation

That's what was in the empty folders. Hillary broke in and retrieved them because she knew this was going to happen. She was very sneaky and left no evidence behind. Cleverly disguised herself so no one recognized her on the security feeds and then just waltzed in and grabbed them from the very sec...

Honestly, though I've never been much of an artist (I find it very draining) I'm surprised how much I'm feeling inspired lately

Spoilered just cause... I dunno, it's tame but I mean there's blood. Well, there's red ink, but you get the idea.
