Ah, I was waiting for that question. :D My assumption is that all basic needs are already taken care of (food, shelter, first aid etc) .... therefore no need for medical books or books on survival skills. So, my books are primarily to satisfy the soul and the heart and all have been read many times....

Funny, I was just pondering this a few days ago only I had limited myself to one book. No prize for guessing LotR :D But five books now! What wealth! LotR, Oxford Book of English Verse, Complete Shakespeare, Silmarillion and........ I'm stuck ..... can't decide between the poetry of e.e.cummings or ...

Yes, Letter 176: I do think of the Dwarves like Jews: at once native and alien in their habitations, speaking the languages of the country, but with the accent due to their own private tongue. I should have clarified that I was indulging in a bit of speculation ... that in addition to the language i...

 I knew most of these clips although the interview is new to me. It is wonderful to actually hear him speak although I can't imagine his students had an easy time with his lectures. Good thing that there is a transcript because I had a hard time with the rapidity of his speech and I'm attuned ...

I am reading your fascinating story in Bag End, Voronwë, and wanted to ask.... what is your perception of the mingling of Islam and indigenous Animist religions? Is there any contradiction there, (many spirits vs. one deity) or are the faiths complimentary? Do the majority of the Malinke people form...

Human-animal embryos for research.

Green light for hybrid research: Regulators have given scientists the green light to create human-animal embryos for research. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority granted permission after a consultation showed the public were "at ease" with the idea. Experts said it was vital...

Oh, come now, Prim! Spock's Brain is a classic. A few more facts: * Though produced after "The Enterprise Incident," "Spock's Brain" aired first, thus opening the third season. * McCoy (DeForest Kelley) utters another famous quote alongside his famous, "He's dead J...

No, Voronwë, I shan't. I can still remember 'Riddles' quite vividly. I think that's because Gollum is such an extraordinary character plus all of the references in LotR. Still, we shall see how accurate my memory is when I get actually there. It was a very long time ago .... 42 years, in fact. :shoc...

Ah, thank you, solicitr, I will take your suggestion and go from there. And report back when I'm done. :D One does feel a tiny bit guilty skipping the opening chapters ... but I've done that with LotR for years now. I invariably begin with The Shadow of the Past and then go straight to the Old Fores...

Hoom. Tolkien was a first class procrastinator, wasn't he? I do wish he had made the final 1960 revisions .... it might have made TH more palatable for me. I've made the attempt to reread it (concurrent with Letters) and just had to close the book after the first few pages again. I can't get past th...

Heh.

Just wait until we begin discussing The Divine Feminine in Tolkien's works, Holby.

Then you can really start pulling out your hair.

Or what's left of it.
