Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

I don't like that analogy because a little while later came Jurassic Park 2 and the dinosaurs kept eating people.

Re: Trump's America

I do think that the thread should stay here for a while as it seems unlikely that this will be the last time there is something Trump related that people want to talk about.

Re: What are you reading?

I think in general a lot of the older classic scifi/fantasy writers were not very good with language, and often fairly mediocre at best. (Though I contend the writing in Dune is particularly bad.) It does seem like fans of the genre cared a lot more about interesting ideas than quality writing back ...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

I mean.... there's no question that in practical terms, the Senate majority leader is a far more important figure than the VP. Who the VP is is relatively unimportant generally speaking.

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

I think it's worth highlighting that Trump is leaving the presidency with the lowest popularity ratings in over 3 years. His approval rating, which stayed a shockingly steady 41-43ish percent thorough out everything, are currently down to 38%. Which doesn't seem like a lot but it does seem to indica...

Re: What are you reading?

That's totally fair. I've certainly read plenty of enjoyable books with mediocre writing. But I find his language skills worse than mediocre.....one of the big things for me was that I found the dialogue super awkward and unnatural. Like it was written by someone who hasn't heard actual humans talk ...

Re: What are you reading?

I had somehow never gotten around to reading Dune, despite always meaning to. And now that I finally have, recently having finished the first book, my main conclusion is - Frank Herbert was a bad writer.

Based on the past conversations, I'm not sure if anyone else here owns a 4K TV so I doubt it!

To my knowledge, there is legally nothing preventing an impeachment from being done very quickly if congress wishes to.

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

I'm glad to see that some here agree that invoking the 25th is the wrong answer to this situation. This very clearly calls for impeachment and going 25th instead because it might be easier or simpler sets a very, very ugly precedent.

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

Under that definition, many of the BLM protests would also qualify as terrorism. I concur, and I think I've said so before. But this was a premeditated attack on the US Capitol orchestrated by the US President with the intent of disrupting democratic proceedings to replace him. That's way, way, way...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

Are you ok with calling those 7% of the protests terrorists? Also. The vast majority of the police at those protests were peaceful, much like the vast majority of the protesters were peaceful. If you don't like the small minorities of BLM protesters being called terrorists because of a small, violen...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

Terrorism is the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government or its citizens to further certain political or social objectives. Law enforcement generally recognizes two types of terrorism: domestic and international. And it seems I have fallen ...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

That is not the relevant question when discussing her death. If she was shot by police, the only relevant question should be - was she armed and posing an immediate threat? I know there's a lot of shit going on right now but I certainly hope we all don't forget that is a question that needs to be an...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

Trump did tweet and post a video asking his followers to remain peaceful and to leave the capital. Don't expect that to matter much since it was between continued talk of a stolen election but it's something at least.
