I'm reading The Hobbit to my Grade Five class........at least I was before the Christmas break, and will continue to do so after I get back from Mexico. A few of the kids have started reading along with me, using their own copies of the book. I always like it when that happens. I'm very glad I have ...

We watched it on Christmas night with our daughter and her boyfriend. We ALL loved it! It was one of those "little movies" that I kept hearing about, but it was on some kind of limited release here, so I was never able to track down where it was playing. I keep getting snippets of the two ...

I regard the internet as an adult toy. I wouldn't be without it, myself!!! But my grandchildren are not allowed to play on my computer. They use computers at school, both their schools are pretty well equipped with computers. But beyond doing the AR tests, Oz doesn't do any school related stuff in ...

Superwizard, it's good to see you here. This news hit me surprisingly hard today. In the last few of months (since just before her return to Pakistan), there have been two or three wonderful interviews with Benazir, as well as "overviews" of her life and politics. Just now, Carol Off...

On Christmas Eve I had to drive to the south end of our island to pick up my daughter at the ferry terminal. Not another car in sight the entire fifteen minute trip. Just me, the road, and the alternative rock radio station that is my son's favourite (because I was growing weary of the Christmas far...

IMO, like Denethor and Théoden, Aragorn releases the person who loves him from the oath she undertook for his sake, believing apparently that she still has the choice. She thinks she doesn't, but we know the ships are still sailing, so what gives? Ah, I see! Yes, I can appreciate how Aragorn's word...

I haven't seen the movie yet, Prim. It actually had two separate runs at our little local theatre (a run being four days), and although Mr. Ath and I swore that we'd find time to go, alas, it could not be so. :( Thank heaven for DVD's and a wide-screen TV! :D There really are some delightful surpris...

As I see it, the point of Arwen's choice is not to give Aragorn his trophy wife or to restore the bloodline - she didn't have to renounce her immortality to do that (see Elf blood in Dol Amroth). The point was for her to spend an eternity beyond the circles of the world with Aragorn rather than wit...

With our daughter staying with us over Christmas, her music is floating upwards from her (old) room just like "the old days". A while ago, it was the soundtrack from "Across the Universe", a movie that she has fallen madly in love with. This isn't the first time I've heard it. Ov...

my objection is this: As a quintessential elf, Arwen, having been schooled by Elrond and Galadriel, the two greatest Elves remaining in Middle Earth, has the accumulated wisdom of 2,000 years and the knowledge of her forebears ..... Tolkien wrote: And for all her wisdom and lineage, she could not f...

Thanks for your reply to my question, Sass. :) Sorry I haven't been back to this thread for a couple of days....our first onslaught of seasonal guests required my due attention. to fulfill that Romance absolutely requires the further mingling of noble Elvish blood with that of one of the last remain...

Sass wrote:As for Arwen's pre-cognition ..... sad to say, that while admittedly visually beautiful, I don't really like the symbolism of it. In fact I don't like the entire 'Arwen is leaving Middle Earth' story line at all.
How do you interpret the symbolism of the scene, Sass?

As for his mummy keeping him safe, wasn't that her reason for moving to Rivendell even in the book? Once he was no longer a child, she couldn't keep him from being a Ranger. That's right, Prim. When his father is killed, Aragorn and his mother are brought to Rivendell. He's given the name Estel to ...

Heck, I liked the scene where Arwen sees the reproachful face of her future child and turns around! Even though it makes absolutely NO SENSE in the general scheme of things (of course she would never go to the Havens! that's a no-brainer!). I think it that scene is absolutely wonderful. In the book...

 Oh yeah. Poor Liv. I would have sacrificed and been her stand-in if I had realized it was such a burden. That's me: a woman for others. :halo: Wampus, you are such a hero. :D But something tells me that you'd have to thumb-wrestle Sass to determine who'd have to sacrifice their lips for poor...

Well I wasn't too fond of Elrond's relationship with her and his threatening lying ways, but that wasn't her fault. I quite like movie Elrond......except for that hoaky line, "You shall be the fellowship of the Ring." I really don't know why this is so. :suspicious: Maybe it's because he ...

What was with the whole Arwen business in TTT!? That could have gone. But then we wouldn't have had this image: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v727/Athrabeth/ARWENARAGORN_a.jpg Death and Immortality, Tolkien's most fundamental theme, right there before our eyes. Yeah, I know Jackson ultimately b...

Well if the LOTR had been translated as written, Arwen would have turned uo in ROTK as just a trophy wife/seamstress. How much dialogue / face time does she have in books 1-5? Quite right! Even though Arwen remains off-stage until she comes to Gondor and weds Aragorn, IMO, her presence (almost enti...

You can't include much of a battle in an audio production without it starting to sound like the Pythons' version of "The Death of Mary, Queen of Scots." Actually, this has always struck me when people compare the BBC version (which I love) with the movies (not the Queen of Scots pa...

Aw, Tosh. You actually included one of my favourite poems from the book. I  alliterative verse. And I very much like your intro. of Dernhelm.....a great interpretation of the book. "Are you ready to ride to your death?"............how dark and chilling! Thanks, as always....and a pea...
