Re: Games, Riddles, Puzzles, and other Distractions
Eldy, for me personally, in addition to the strategy reasoning, it's mostly the frustration of the whack-a-mole method when one comes across a group of words like: taint, faint, haint, paint, saint, etc... That drives me crazy and advances nothing/is based on sheer luck not skill. :D One can always...

Re: Yet another new Tolkien book!
If this is of comparable quality as a critical edition to Flieger's edition of The Story of Kullervo, I imagine it will be a worthwhile read for people interested in the scholarly side of Tolkien fandom, especially those without access to paywalled academic journals.

"Architect of the Capitol" is the name of the agency (and the title of the head of said agency) in charge of maintaining the physical Capitol Building and the larger complex of which it is the centerpiece. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Architect_of_the_Capitol I don't really like agreeing ...

Re: The last movie you saw Thread
I finally dragged myself to the theatre (not normally a big investment, but it's a ... fun time of year :P) to see Avatar: The Way of Water today. I figured this deserved to be seen on the biggest screen possible, so I drove a bit further than usual to catch it in IMAX 3D. My thoughts are broadly in...

Wordle 562 4/6* 🟩🟨⬛🟩⬛ 🟩⬛⬛🟩🟩 🟩⬛🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 Bad day in Hurdle today. I've been considering switching back to normal mode—Rose has made a persuasive case for there being a greater strategy aspect to that version of the game—but in all honesty it's frustrating days that make me consider it most. :P I trie...

Re: World News Thread
I'm reading a BBC article about the flooding now. I'm not great at staying on top of the news these days, and the severity of them had passed me by, too.

According to Wiktionary, dowar/douar means "a camp or village of tents in an Arabic country." Merriam-Webster gives a similar definition but without listing the alternate spelling.

I've never read The Eye of Argon , so you'll have to tell me how accurate this is. :D Retell Bilbo's party scene in the style of The Eye of Argon. In the hall of Bag End, the mighty hobbit Bilbo Baggins did hold a grand feast to celebrate his birthday. The guests did gather 'round, their eyes aglow ...

As far as ChatGPT's talent for writing narrative fiction goes, I'll give it this: the results are better than its lyrics. Write some Eminem-style bars that include the phrase "tra-la-la-lally." I'm the king of the rap game, ain't no one comin' close Tra-la-la-lally, ain't no one messin' wi...

How does it do with discussions about opinions, or personal preferences? What about questions like "What's your favourite part of the book?" Or, "Which part did you find the most scary?" It goes out of its way to remind people that it's an AI when asked to give personal opinions...

Nice!
Also, since I missed replying to this when you asked a few months ago (and only just noticed when clicking the little arrow to go back and see my quoted post in context), I have indeed noticed and enjoyed your avatar/signature synchronization.
