Re: 2016 United States Election
If identical propaganda takes root in some places and not others, either the circumstances aren't the same or the people aren't (or both). Taking it as given the circumstances are close enough as to be indifferent, that leaves the people. I'm also going to assume biology doesn't come into play, whi...

An interesting counterpoint to the article from Cracked that puts its finger on some of the problems I had with the original article.

it was emotionally devastating in a way that made me pretty sure I don't ever want to watch that one again Those are always hard to grade. One of the roots. Evil is like crabgrass. It's hard to get rid of without hurting everything around it.

Re: 2016 United States Election
ax, I think you're right about all that, but I don't think exploring the larger historical context was what Wong was after--he just wanted to explain why he thinks people stuck in that situation, however it came to be, feel and vote the way they do. But putting both together sounds like a great ide...

And BTW, Dave_LF's suggestion to look at that other Cracked article? Do it. The two together make a very different impression than either separate.

Re: 2016 United States Election
The Cracked article is accurate in a sort of blinkered way, but doesn't go into the larger historical context. The country way of life Wong describes is based on an agrarian model of society that has been in decline since the late 1800s (and beyond that, on land stolen from the people living on it,...

Well, if LOTR was about one of the surviving dwarves, maybe.

Right--but his own show is written such that you aren't missing anything vital about the character if you don't see JJ.

Re: TV obsessions—come on, admit it!
I know characters cross in from DD and JJ, but I don't think I've missed much by not watching them first. It's like they (and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, represented mostly by references to "the Incident") exist but don't impinge.

Well that's the problem. I'm compassionate AND suspicious. I think it may be a writer thing.

I am enjoying "Luke Cage" in three-episode chunks, which isn't so much bingeing as having an extra slice.

I've decided that I'm not going to worry about AI until they find a way of reproducing neurologically-rooted psychological drives. You know, the reasons we treat each other so badly (and for that matter, so well). Otherwise it's hard to see an AI "wanting" anything.

Re: Myers-Briggs, redux
As it turns out I have low agreeableness, which surprised me at first. Looking over the questions, though, I submit the relevant ones have more to do with trust than empathy.
I can empathize with people just fine. That makes me trust them less, not more.

Re: 2016 United States Election
The question, it seems to me, is one of degree and not kind. It's clear from news reports that a significant portion of men--I don't doubt it's a majority in places where active misogyny is still openly practiced and encouraged--view women as a special sort of property. I suspect in the U.S. the pe...

If anything, I think Trump's campaign has emboldened people with deplorable beliefs to claim them publicly.
