Ah! Thanks for the legend, dna! I was at a loss about what was going on with all the text variations. Now things are lot clearer! :) BTW, I'm familiar (on some level) with everyone listed in #1-60 and #101-150. Go me! :horse: At #151, however, things start going downhill. At least 9 "unknowns&q...

My only question is, if it's not MSG making me feel puffy and drowsy after I have cheap Chinese food or those corn chips with chili and lime, what is it? Guilt. :D Or maybe, in the case of Chinese food, too much of a good thing. Mr. Ath used to work on commercial appliances, and saw the good, the b...

A couple of weeks ago, I was talking to my oldest, dearest "best friend". We've known each other since Grade Five......became BFF's when we were about 14. Somehow, we started talking about the first "big name" concert that we went to together.....Donovan. Sheesh....talk about wal...

Eärendil is doomed to keep sailing across the sky until the end of Arda, though, isn't he, and never to see his sons again? I suppose Frodo's fate is slightly more merciful than that. Ah, but Eärendil had Elwing, and although they were apart while he was "voyaging", they were never really...

There's also a difference between saying there is no God, and not saying anything about God at all. Most movies, most forms of entertainment even, don't deal directly with the subject at all. Neither does this movie. Again, I haven't read the books, so I don't know what they say, but I fail to see ...

Zounds! Yesterday, I caught up on over three months' worth of "episodes", and it felt like the equivalent of not being able to put a book down. Really, Tosh, this just so impressive to me. I can SEE the story unfolding so clearly in a very different way than I see it while r...

Killing God? Apparently Mr. Pullman has made it his mission to "kill the idea of god". I don't think he's going to succeed!!! But the chat around Tay's school is this bit about killing god. Man, if you want to make kids want something, tell them it's wicked. These people never learn. No d...

Ah!

You're right! Their first habitation was Almaren in Middle-earth.

That pretty much takes care of most of the "among others", doesn't it?

And I just realized that of course, Finwë came from Middle-earth to Aman.

Some of the Numenorians, however........ :suspicious:

Same could be said for a number of other entities, who are regarded as most important in Middle Earth. Finwë? Manwë? Bueller? Yes. Except for Bueller. And really all Fëanor accomplished in Middle Earth proper amounted, was to march north in full snit and get his butt whooped. But Fëanor leadi...

Anyway... to be pedantic Fëanor among others never entered Middle Earth. Holby-dear, hang on to that Snit........ :er: I'm afraid that Fëanor did actually enter Middle-earth......it was just the super-sized version - the one before Beleriand slipped under the waves after a little skirmish known as ...

Thank-you, Sass, for bringing this thread back to mind. So much of what you say about "layers of truth" within Tolkien's works speaks right to my heart (as well as my head, and that's a rare convergence!) You have inspired me to crack the knuckles of my brain cells, and put together a post...

I wonder if Tolkien was thinking of the implications of Saruman being a Maia when he wrote his death. I rather think he was just writing what seemed to work for Saruman's character --- the greatness of his fall, the utter ruin of what was once so good. Others would know more about this than me, tho...

The thing is that the majority of Europe does not believe that invading a country by military force is a viable solution to any problem, on a practical level (invasion doesn't solve the actual problem) as well as on a moral level (military aggression is unethical). So, if peace keeping missions and...

Padme, I don't think people in other western countries are complaining about what the US is not doing in Darfur with any more urgency than complaining about what their own governments are not doing there. I'm pretty sure that most German or French or Canadian citizens who are concerned about what ha...

Not to mention the French UN peacekeepers who stood aside and let the Serbs into Scrbernica. Dutch troops were at Srebrenica, not French. I know how devastated my Dutch relatives felt over what transpired there. And it wasn't exactly a matter of "standing aside" - it was far more complica...
