Re: Israel and Gaza
The Palestinian casualties are incredibly distressing. So many young children. :( Hamas are brutal and cynical and of course they shouldn't be firing rockets into Israel :x and of course Israel has every right to defend itself. Hamas began this crap. With the murder of those three Jewish teenagers -...

Re: The Children of Húrin
I'm glad you got to read it finally, Di. It is a great work. So glad we have it! I don't know why you would get kickback for saying that M-e in the first age was a desolate place. That's just the truth. It was very odd! As SV says, it was a few TS veterans. They disagreed and said the First Age was...

The Children of Húrin
I did a search for this topic and it doesn't SEEM to have appeared before ... I posted this on the FB page of the Tolkien Society and wanted to post it here, too. Because you peeps are so good at talking Tolkien. I finally – FINALLY! - got round to reading The Children of Húrin when I was on ...

Re: Tolkien Book to Jackson Script: The Medium and the Messa
I actually thought Lilly's Tauriel was more Eowyn-esque than Otto's Éowyn! Tauriel had a soft side, so to speak (as do we all), but never did she come across as vulnerable or pathetic, as Otto's Éowyn did on a few occasions. Overall, I would have loved to have seen a stronger and colder Éowyn in th...

Re: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Beutlin, I liked your post. :) So are we finally going to get the long-awaited Gandalf/Galadriel makeout scene? SPOILER ALERT: SAURON IS DEFEATED WITH THE POWER OF TRUE LOVE'S KISS  I'd watch that. =:) Especially with Sauron being played by the Cumberbatch. The trailer. Oh, I liked it....

Re: 12 Years a Slave
There is one scene in particular, where the camera lingers for a very long time, passing from day and into night, that is one of the more powerful images I have seen in any film. I will not spoil it, but you will know it when you see it. Yes. And a shorter scene near the end is also amazing. I fina...

I adored the first film. Visually it was gorgeous and the story had a funny, magical, quirky charm. The trailer for 2 seemed to give most of the storyline away  but I don't care, I'll go to see it anyway. :D For Hiccup and Toothless! I'm sure both films have deviated massively from the Britis...

But unlike with LOTR and TH, the TV series improves upon the source material dramatically, IMO. I don't doubt that. I don't have much interest in reading GRRM's books since they seem interminable. (I adore historical fiction, so it's not because I don't enjoy quasi-historical fantasy fiction.) I do...

Oh, me too, Frelga! Mr Knightley is not only my favourite Austen man but one of my top favourite men in literature. :) He kind of ties with Faramir. :D Which adaptation of Emma did you see? Gwyneth Paltrow's Emma is super-annoying, IMO, but I love Jeremy Northam's Knightley, and it's awesome ...

Heh. 'British villains' Jaguar commercial. Tom the Hid, Mark Strong and Sir Ben Kingsley rocking 'it's good to be bad'.

I have a feminist friend who adores Molly because you don't have to be Lara Croft in order to be a strong woman. Molly - shy, socially awkward Molly - is a strong woman. Just because she's nervous and quiet doesn't mean she's not strong. The 'Kick Ass Girl' trope gets very tiresome when it's over-do...

This issue has been discussed before ;) but I find it frustrating when posts are deleted. ;) It implies that you think your opinion is not worth listening to, when that is simply not the case. :) Aplogies for any frustrations I might have caused, but what you say is indeed partly true. :) I don't k...

I think it can be a tough forum because it's pretty intellectual. ;) OK. Thanks. Meaning: sometimes it's a bit over my head too. :help: I mean, I think I can hold my own in an intellectual debate about Tolkien but honestly, I'm more about the 'feels' than the analysis when it comes to his work. Alt...

I think it can be a tough forum because it's pretty intellectual. ;) Me, I'm just a Frodo-fan. :D Although I do believe my critical faculties are in place ... Anyway. I absolutely see Frodo as having agency. As do many other characters. No question. I have long held that Míriel is the most important...

At the same time, there are important parts they really get right in the movies, such as Frodo's mercy and compassion towards Gollum. The often-forgotten bit after Shelob's lair, where Frodo wants to spare Gollum even after his treachery is clear, is one of the better invented scenes. And he shows ...

A story where the purpose of the main character is to suffer has limited mainstream appeal, so any adaptation designed for commercial success has a Hobson's Choice: change the character to be less passive or allow the other characters around him to horn in on the protagonist's job enough to make it...

... I never found Frodo all that interesting. I'm one of those that generally agree with the criticism that most of LOTR's characters are kinda flat and dull and I lump Frodo in with those characters. Really? You think that most of LotR's characters are kinda flat and dull?  Wow. :...
