I thought this article might be of interest - written by Brian May, formerly of 70's rock group Queen! Only a critic wouldn't be rocked by The Lord of the Rings Brian May, Citizen Special I was interested to read (in my inbox -- somebody always obliges) your critic Jamie Portman's vitriolic damnatio...

Actually, I recall reading that they don't want it referred to as a musical. They prefer "Stage Play" or some such. That's fine - they can call it that if they like. Mozart billed Don Giovanni as a dramma giocoso , Rossini's Mosé in Egitto was an azione tragico-sacra , Monteverdi's Orfeo ...

Awww.... :) Some of this talk of Musicals vs. Opera is skirting around another issue - what is opera, anyway? A drama with sung dialogue instead of spoken? So then, what's the difference between a musical and an opera, anyway? (those of you that know my thoughts on the subject already know what my a...

So, can you edit your post? I just read it now. (but don't feel too bad on my account - I still haven't decided if I'm goi...

Does Wagner's treatment have the same Túrin parallels that I mentioned? *looks back* Yes, except for the sword made from a shooting star (which may be mentioned somewhere in the 12+ hours, I just don't remember it offhand, so I suspect it isn't there). There is the tarnhelm, made by the Dwarf Mîm, ...

Those of you that find Wagner "too much" should check out his early works, like The Flying Dutchman or Tannhäuser. Very accessible and melodic.

What are we doing discussing Wagner in a classical music thread, though? Shouldn't someone start that Late German Romantic thread? :D

Haven't I been doing my best? I've been discussing Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Brahms, and Mahler! I do have to say one of my peeves with classical music threads is that they usually always end up revolving around Bach and Mozart. Those composers just don't do it for me unfortunately. You could always s...
