Re: The (no longer) much too early 2024 election thread

The 22nd amendment only limits the number of elected terms and vacancy filling terms, not the number of terms obtained by other means.

Re: TV obsessions—come on, admit it!

If you are looking for hard science fiction, you are in the wrong place. Star Trek is space opera, and it's good at it. I try not to puzzle out the lack of scientific accuracy, such as why people aren't squashed flat every time they accelerate. I don't buy the whole "inertial damper" thing...

Re: Nature Pics

The nice thing about getting winded when hiking up a steep trail, is the opportunity to stand quietly for 5 minutes, and be surprised by a gray fox trotting up to a rock nearby and curling up for a nap. (He was about 50 feet away, I had a camera with telephoto lens in hand.)

"Ow!" he cried. "You are too hard now to slap!" (Bilbo, to Frodo, after Frodo put on the mithril shirt.)

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!

I'm currently in a secluded valley, camping, but there's a free wifi site at the visitor's center. So of course I had to check in ;) And then I pulled up Libby, downloaded FOTR and hey presto! I thought the quote might be in Rivendell. But could not find it with a quick skim. I'm off now, for anothe...

Re: What are you reading?

Frelga and Rose, I found out you can manage your holds in Libby to come available after a certain date. Click on "Manage Hold", then "Delivering Later", then move the slider to the date at which you will optimistically have time to read it. The book will be delivered soon after t...

Re: The Expanse

I went to the monthly Zoom-mini-moot today with Jude and we talked about, among other things, The Expanse. I'm not going to say how many times I have seen the series and read (listened to) the books, but it's probably not up to the level of repeat reading of the LOTR books over the years, or rewatch...

Re: The (no longer) much too early 2024 election thread

The County of Alameda Voter Information Guide is more clear than the State of California Guide I discussed in my post above. It states: Voter-Nominated Offices The March 5, 2024 Offices: US Senator, US Senator (Partial/Unexpired), US Representative, State Senate, Member of the State Assembly Who adv...

Re: The (no longer) much too early 2024 election thread

I've already voted as well. The Official Voter Information Guide states the following, on pages 17 and 20. It could have been worded more clearly. My comments are added in italics. Elections in California The Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act requires that all candidates for a voter-nominated offi...

Re: The (no longer) much too early 2024 election thread

Indeed, what's next, apparently , is " ending recreational sex and senseless use of birth control pills." It's always been an option for sex to be recreational for men. It has only been the past few decades, with better contraceptives, that fertile women have had the option of care-free s...

Re: The (no longer) much too early 2024 election thread

Do they define contraception as preventing fertilization or as preventing the implantation/impregnation of the fertilized zygote? IUDs and some low-dose versions of the Pill do permit ovulation and fertilization, but not implantation several days later, because the uterus is not properly prepared. A...
