Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions
One more comment on Faraday cages. Our city had a jail in the basement of one of the city buildings that was heavily reinforced with extra rebar in all the walls, which was handy when it was a jail. When we later converted it to an Emergency Operations Center, we were not-so-delighted to find out th...

Re: Nature Pics
In Fairbanks in the dead of winter, when the days were only 4 hours long, I would often ski through the woods at night. I was surrounded by snow-burdened black spruce, silence, glittering stars, and bitter cold. Every chance encounter with the aurora overhead was unexpected and dumbfounding. They sw...

Re: What are you reading?
Another book report. I keep feeling overwhelmed by my lending shelf on Libby, yet when I look back, I am consuming on average 2-3 books per week, so I shouldn't complain. Lest you be envious, understand that this represents 60 years of pent up desire to curl up with a good book all day long. And I p...

Special effects in Rings of Power
This just popped up in my feed. They discuss the water related special effects of several movies and TV shows, but later on concentrate on the scene on the raft in ROP. It's enough to give you hypothermia just watching it. https://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/news/how-ocean-storms-are-filmed-in-water-ta...

"Debt" is now on my list, as soon as I finish David Graeber's other book - "The Dawn of Everything - A New History of Humanity". It's very nutrient dense

Re: What are you reading?
Interestingly, there are at least three other authors who wrote books titled "Take Me With You", but the one by Hyde is not available to me in Libby. She has written quite a few other books, though, like "Pay it Forward". Evidently she started that popular movement back in 2000. ...

Hmmm, I have 9 official names, but you probably aren't referring to me. And besides, I'm always fine with the pace.

Re: What are you reading?
Frelga, I'm glad you liked it. It's been a month, so here are some more book blurbs. My struggle to deal with my mushrooming to-read list is real. I went through the hundreds of books on my bookshelves, and donated most of them, but not before adding them to my to-read list on my phone, where they w...

Re: Another "new" Tolkien book
I was concerned with your saying that someone who is not doing engineering is not an engineer. I disagree. I have been an engineer all my life. Being an engineer is much more than just a job. I'm not doing engineering at the moment, but I will always be an engineer. It is my identity. It is how I vi...

Re: Elon's Twitter
I learned to drive in a '69 Mustang. A very solid, powerful car. I used to monitor Twitter in a job related capacity, but now I just poke my head in occasionally and shudder. Facebook is doing that "picked for you" garbage, about every third post, which is so irritating. I just want to see...

They look broken to me, on Chrome, on my Android phone. A few days ago, only some were broken. Now they are broken all the way back to the beginning of the thread.

I disagree. But I don't feel comfortable saying more.Voronwë the Faithful wrote: ↑Sat Dec 24, 2022 5:34 pm
A scholar is someone who does scholarly work. I wouldn't call someone who does not do engineering work an engineer either. That's not snobbery. It's fact.

Re: Stephen Colbert to produce Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber
This series isn't in any of my libraries thru Libby. I might have to break down and get an actual, paper, book from an actual, brick-and-mortar, library.
Meanwhile, I've added 3 of his other books to my increasingly improbable "to be read" list.

"Fish" can mean a variety of things. (Don't look it up on the Internet. Really. Just don't.) I'm assuming he was using the "naive" meaning.

Re: Moby Dick Group Read?
I checked with my Libby App. Not only is there a copy available in the Los Angeles Public Library, there are over 40 different editions available, abridged, unabridged, Marvel Comics version, versions toned down for kids, and versions in English, French and Spanish. One of the audio narrators is Bur...
