Ok, I'm going to try to explain this, but might mess it us so bear with me :). I'm not interested in "religion." I'm not interested in a set of rules for my life defined by some guys that say they've been able to communicate with God better than I can. So, if Jesus did not say the things a...

I have no problem with Mormons thinking they are Christians. I think they're wrong, but everyone is entitled to being wrong, and if they want to talk to me about being a Christian, I'll point out where I think they are wrong (most notably, needing MORE than just Jesus to be saved). I DO have a probl...

Yov and LM, yes, that logic does assume the scriptures are accurate with regards to what Jesus said.

If the Scripture is inaccurate, it's all meaningless anyway.

Well, he claimed to be the Messiah. If you believe he was not the Messiah, then he's not only a liar, but someone twisting Judaism around and making it somethign it is not. That seems bad to me. A common Christian apologetic statement is simply this, either Jesus was the Messiah, or he was a liar. T...

I have communion all the time, and I haven't been to church in a long time. Communion is about remmebering Christ's sacrifice... tying it to specific rituals with priests or pastors in a church at specific times... seems unecessary to me. That any church would refuse that to someone who felt they ne...

I don't have an issue at all with people finding a new truth which has grown from the roots of Judaism; I do have a problem with those who say that the (any) new truth is the Truth and the roots are no longer relevant except as having given life to this new Truth. This supercessionist philosophy (&...

They do not believe in redemption through Jesus Christ. They believe in redemption through Jesus Christ AND Joseph Smith. That makes them non-Christians. They are followers of Joseph Smith. If anything, they could be called Smithians. They use Christianity to add legitimacy to their religion when it...

If Jesus added to and changed Judaism, then how can one believe he is the Messiah? You put your finger on it, Hal. But that's a question for a Christian to answer, not for me. Well, that was my point. A Christian believes he was the JEWISH Messiah. Not just "a messiah" or another of God's...

Yes, it is quite interesting. So often we get caught up in saying "Oh I don't believe in that, I'm going to do it MY way," when it's really just as easy and much more loving to go with people's stricter beliefs when with them. It doesn't hurt us, and makes them more comfortable.

Anthy, anyone that excludes YOU is missing out on a lot :). I just happened to read this last night (I too, like to read my bible :), though I don't do it often enough), and it fits oh so perfectly with what we're discussing I can't help but think God led me to it. Romans 14 The Weak and the Strong ...

Hal: to the historical options you described I would have to say, "none of the above." It was not Jesus who did away with the dietary laws or installed a Christmas tree in every home. I think your appreciation for the ancient roots of Christianity is admirable (and I wish more Christians ...

Yes, they put higher stock in the family unit than any other popular religion and they have an entire state they pretty much run, so there are a lot of like minded people who want their kids to do well in school and are willing to pay taxes to run those schools well.

Can I just say I really don't like the word "sect" I realize it's accurate, and I've used it myself many times for clarity sake (and because denomination is a LONG word ;) ), but to me it is roughly equivilent to "cult." Probably because I've lived in California for a long time a...

to be fair, I'm bringing up the comarisons to Mormonism... just because that topic was recently brought up... and I find myself saying to Jnyusa the same things a Mormon would say to me trying to convince me Mormons are Christians. That's why I was trying to explore how the two situatiosn were diffe...

I think the reason I object to that idea (that it added to and changed it), is because I consider one of the reasons that Christianity is true to be because it is rooted in such an ancient religion. If Jesus added to and changed Judaism, then how can one believe he is the Messiah? If he invented som...

Ok, I understand Jnyusa's objection. Even if the Jews for Jesus are Jews by blood, they are not practising Judaism as it is defined currently by the collective Rabbi community. So if they are merely Christians who are also saying they have jewish ancestry, there should be no objection. The objection...

Ok, in the one sense, I understand why this is upsetting, because I was upset when people were saying Mormons were Christians. However, because there is a long Jewish tradition and culture, I don't understand why someone who believes in Jesus as a Christian, can't appreciate their being part of that...
