I didn't mean to trivialize the point here, really. I've discussed this before (I'm a Free Willer, TBH), and would be happy to discuss it again. New people in any discussion means a different discussion, and this is not a point on which I feel any conclusion is necessarily final or correct, or any ...

The junkie does take, take, take, and abuses his friends and loved ones, and goes off with his junkie mates. But it's his friends and loved ones who keep on trying and keep coming back t...

Ah. :D I dislike Sam's speech for the same reason Passdagas does ... I think it's sentimental. And because I think it shows that PJ really does rate Sam higher than Frodo. I would guess that PJ & Co. understood objectively enough the role of Frodo in the book. I just think they chose to recast ...

I don't know if my vote counts for much but I think it's a worthwhile undertaking and should be continued. The journey may, at times, seem like a slog but I believe there is so much more to analyse, disagree on and stimulate discussion in later chapters. The structure, idiom, scope and ambition exp...

The question then becomes how does this impact Jackson and the film he puts together for the big conclusion? Is he willing to accept less than the billion dollar target or will pick-ups in May be impacted so that it turns into more of the box office draw they were hoping for? Is a billion dollars a...

Considering the kinds of movie that often get nominated for makeup, their standards are clearly something different than what we as lay-people see because often times the noms go to movies with very little flashy or noticeable makeup/hair work. That said....I don't really think the make-up/hair of ...

The Tauriel scene is not particularly long; I think it is your perception more than anything else. It'll be interesting when the DVD is released to be able to objectively compare the length. And, of course, Tauriel is actually doing something, while Arwen is merely blubbering. My take on it is that...

Except those super-sweet "glass" pieces up above, right? :poke: I enjoy those, but IMO, they don't even come close. Too cartoonish and more of an elaborate illustration than a piece of art. I also think they feel quite second-hand, being depictions of PJ's films rather than Tolkien's book...

... one notable thing that has come to light is a translation of the Elvish that Tauriel mumbles whilst healing Kili: "May the blessing that was given to me be sent from me to him, may he be released from death" Emulating Arwen much...even though she is a 'lesser' Elf? Still immortal, tho...

I haven't noticed Joan Wyatt being mentioned. I'm not sure about Tolkien art because I find it difficult to separate the art from the Tolkien. Joan Wyatt's paintings are not exceptional as art, IMO, but her album was one of the first contributions by "other minds and hands" that I came ac...

Here's one inconsistency I forgot about: for a long time, it's bugged me that Sam doesn't attract Sauron's attention from using the Ring so close to Mordor. IIRC, I think Tolkien takes particular care to make a distinction and ensure that Sam takes the Ring off when he crosses into Mordor. EDIT: We...

A plot can have drive and urgency without the threat of violence... You can excise huge parts of LotR from Gandalf's conversation with Frodo in his kitchen to the hobbits' arrival in Bree and it makes no difference to the story. A film can be intellectually satisfying and connect with its audience ...

For Tolkien nuts like me, there are little bits here and there in DOS that are intriguing, even if PJ and company didn't intend them. ... I know from the Book of Lost Tales II (page 286) that Tolkien conceived of a story where the sun lost its enchantment when it traveled under the earth, because U...
