Earl was my guru-master, and the main reason I (along with many others) got into bluegrass in a big way many years ago. The musical world won't be quite as bright without him. There are those who play "fancier" these days, but no one has ever played banjo better or with more taste and driv...

While I do enjoy board games of all sorts, I've never really explored interactive computer or video games etc. so I probably won't be ordering the Beatles Rock Band game....at least for now. My gut-level (and probably predictable) reaction to the "rock band" sorts of games is that if kids ...

Have you heard the Ben Folds' new CD Way To Normal ?
It's a bit more like the older BFF material in terms of attitude and energy.

Wow! Thanks a bunch Yov! My favorite way to find great music is by asking folks what they like. I will def. check these all out and let you know what I think. I'm familiar with Feist and Broken Social Scene , but not Metric . The Montreal group I couldn't think of before is Land Of Talk . Hear...

as long as Norman Smith was the engineer he obediently followed the Rule that bass frequencies on pop records be rolled off (lest they cause little Close-n-Plays to skip!). Excellent point. The low level of bass is the one thing that bugs me about the early Beatles recordings. When I listen to thos...

Yovargas, thanks for the thread link. Interesting discussion there! Everytime I come to this site I learn something, and I laugh too (and that's a pretty good combo!) Yes, I have been enjoying all those artists. My tastes tend to be pretty eclectic. My son and I went to see Ben Folds last fall. I ju...

I don't know...I would really like to hear what they do with Tomorrow Never Knows in the stereo mix. I know what you mean! :D (Ok, so what the h@#$, buy both box sets. A year from now the pain of how expensive they were won't matter! and you'll still have all that great music! ;) ) In regard to itu...

Modern Musical Artists

All the recent talk about music (whether, folk, bluegrass, or the Beatles) has got me thinking along more modern lines now. In an effort to update my library of current music, I'm interested in what everyone/anyone would recommend. My teenage kids have gotten me into some current artists, including:...

Geeez, I got a bit carried away there (it happens when you're passionate about something!!). But, after all that , for those who are debating which remastered CDs to get, I guess what I'm recommending is: Buy the mono CD set, and supplement that with the last 4 or 5 individual stereo CDs (perhaps ha...

A bit more about recording the Beatles, and the mono versus stereo issue. George Martin, Norman Smith (primary engineer for the first six albums), Geoff Emerick (engineer for Revolver , Sgt. Pepper , part of "White Album" , and Abbey Road ) and the four Beatles themselves never took the st...

Dear me. I could go on and on forever about Galadriel. I love Galadriel, the Lady of Lothlórien. I don't think she is "complete", and I sometimes think she gave the Blessed Realm a good shaking up . . . . Thank you vison! As far as I am concerned you may "go on and on" any time ...

And, of course, Gandalf the White was not really associated or aligned with any of the Valar, but instead with Eru himself, having been sent back from Death with the original plan "enhanced" and with expanded powers not by the Valar but by the One. Wow V., this seems so important and so o...

There seems to be a latent character flaw in the followers of Aulë that, under the correct circumstances, makes them too fond of their own cleverness, or the works thereof. Curunir and Sauron seem to have shared this. Ah Ha! This makes a lot of sense. I knew the Noldor and Sauron were associated wi...

Elentári: thanks for posting the info on and link for Because (another terrific Lennon song). The wind-band arrangement sounds fascinating! Was it arranged soley around the original "three voices", or were more harmonies added? (my 18 yr old son arranged Because for a four part chorus as a...

Slippery indeed! (and manipulative). This passage is just plain creepy. The scariest part may be: deploring maybe evils done by the way, but approving the high and ultimate purpose How many times in history have established higher standards been compromised with "temporary" dark methods to...

I think the mono mixes of even the later albums would be fascinating (I heard the mono Sgt Pepper , once)- in many cases the difference isn't just balance: but even different takes! I didn't know that! Wow, that would be great to have the different takes... Songs like I Wanna Hold Your Hand I think...
