Re: The biggest question
I took the eagle arriving as a recognition of Mirel's coronation and Pharazon stoled the opportunity to promote himself. Seems he's good at that. Yes, I do agree the fall of Númenor is essentially the leading affect of the second age and how they handle that will be critical. Yes, the Valar need to ...

Re: Join me in a re-read of the Lord of the Rings?
Well, Merry and Pippin have just finished the Ent Moot and Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas and have reunited with Gandalf. That is where I am now. A few observations from the reading. 1. The songs Tolkien put into the text . . . some I like, some I seem are tedious. I understand they convey knowledge . ....

Re: Join me in a re-read of the Lord of the Rings?
The Bridge of Khazad-dûm. Reading the Book of Mazarbul seems to show to me that show that the effort of Balin and company, though successful at first, resulted in the death of all the dwarves. It seems the enemy heard of this and sent Orcs up the Silverlode to retake Moria from the Balen and company...

Re: Join me in a re-read of the Lord of the Rings?
Journey in the Dark As they approached the doors of Moria, the passed over the northernmost corner of the lake and found the water was only ankle deep. I like how it shared here that "Frodo shuddered with disgust at the touch of the dark unclean water on his feet. Tolkien does a good job here o...

Re: Join me in a re-read of the Lord of the Rings?
One more thing I forgot from this part. I LOVE this song/poem. It is perhaps my favorite because I can related to it as I am getting older: For me it is because it mentions the seasons and I do love the seasons (though winter is far too long some years). I love that the verse stanza is about life ri...

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)
I agree Dave. It's not a deal breaker and I can accept what they are doing and I understand why they are doing it. IMO I believe they raise the Balrog so they are aware of its existence and where it is at, and I think with the commitments made to the dwarf lords that is why they will begin mining fo...

Love the balrog depiction. I would like to build Rivendell but that will have to wait for awhile. Minis Tirith would be awesome! I'd like to see a Gondolin would be cool also.

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)
Upfront, I accept Rings of Power for what it is, an adaptation of Tolkien's world and I watch and have enjoyed it. I've reached a point where the books are the books, the movies are an artist interpretation of Tolkien's writing and I am fine with that. It also is a medium that keeps Tolkien in the f...

Re: Join me in a re-read of the Lord of the Rings?
Man, my post didn't take! So the first post was on the council. Some impressions. Boromir. Faramir had the dream to seek the sword that was broken and Isildur's bane. Boromir took it upon himself to do it. Echo of some pride there which leads to his fall? Also, Boromir shows that often though we rec...

Re: Join me in a re-read of the Lord of the Rings?
Weathertop to Rivendell First thing I noticed here was as they traveled, the company spent a night in a shallow pit that looked like it had been quarried once. As Frodo lay half in a dream the text says "imagining that endless dark wings were sweeping by above him, and that on the wings rode pu...

Re: Join me in a re-read of the Lord of the Rings?
Great post Dave! Thank you! Last night was Weathertop. The description last night of Frodo and his compulsion to put on the ring at the encounter at Weathertop with the Nazgûl. Despite knowing he should not do so, he simply felt he has to put the ring on his finger. Frodo attempts to resist but even...

Re: Join me in a re-read of the Lord of the Rings?
Well, I went from the Black Rider being chased away from Gildor and the High Elves with him. Wonderful reading how the Elves were and Frodo's input to not ask an Elf for advice . . . and Gildor's reply. The time with Farmer Maggott and the mushrooms, and the chase by the black rider at the Brandywin...

Re: Join me in a re-read of the Lord of the Rings?
Last night I was really focusing on Gandalf's account of Gollum. I think it is interesting that Gollum was considered by Gandalf to be the most inquisitive and curious of his people. That he was most interested in roots and groundings. That Gollum or Sméagol was ever looking downward and ceased look...

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)
Spoilers . . . I have to say I enjoyed episode 7. I LOVE the deceit of Sauron displayed here. I enjoyed most of the seventh episode tonight. Fighting was good and it was nice to see Gil-galad in action . . . I loved also the scenes between Sauron and Celebrimbor. Not sure about Galadriel and the nin...

Re: Join me in a re-read of the Lord of the Rings?
Hi Voronwë, It's Jay so feel free to use that. Tonight Frodo taking over Bag End and his walking under the stars . . . I swim 6 days a week for an hour a day (gone from 360 to 212 now) and I am walking 3 evenings a week out on trails near where I live. Nice connection there as like Frodo, I love wal...

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)
I agree I like how Sauron is developing . . . that they are doing a good job with. I'm glad it's on. I just became unemployed and now need an outlet while I find a new job/career for the next 5-7 years . . . . need the income until the retirement kicks in. So I'll be around more. Overall, I have enj...

Yep, just started this again after taking a few years break . . . lot's of time now, unemployed for now . . . for a while . . . I forgot after a couple of years not reading how much I have enjoyed . . . The preparations for the party . . . The dialogue about Frodo's parents death . . . Gandalf and B...

We'll see how this goes. Mixed feelings on it. I'll wait for the reviews but I bet my 30 year old son will drag me to it. I don't attend movies much anymore so it has to be worth it to me.

Re: The Hunt for Gollum (Working Title)
Sigh . . . more $ as Voronwë stated. We'll see who it stars besides Andy. Yes, I'll attend but I think I would have preferred other options from the Appendix's. I'd love to see one written about Prince Eärnur and the fall of Angmar etc. I think that would have provided a more interesting movie.

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)
I will be interested in Rings of Power. I think my take on this, is there is the written word, what Tolkien wrote and for me that is the key. I love reading and forming interpretations from the writing. Both Peter Jackson's adaptations and Rings of Power Adaptations are that, visual adaptations of T...
