Like many of you, I am a bit apprehensive about a third movie. The more stuff PJ and company have to invent, the greater the chance they will have stuff I won't like. I'm hoping for the best though. I am guessing that the first film will concentrate on the journey of Bilbo and the dwarves, as shown ...

Vison is right. I don't think there is any question that Watson has a speed advantage in buzzing in. The two guys playing against Watson are fantastic Jeopardy players and I'm sure they knew almost all the correct answers (or "questions"). But Watson managed to buzz in ahead of them at lea...

Dân, I too am very much looking forward to the weekly lists. When I mentioned to my fifth grade daughter that you were posting this list of 1200 characters and that you would be including many animals including the famous Fox, she immediately said, "But what about the 'theoretical squirrel' ?&q...

Folca - Middle-Earth Quest has arrived in games shops in the US this week. My pre-ordered copy is in transit and is supposed to be delivered by Saturday. You should be able to order it online if there is no local game store stocking it in your area.

Some of my thoughts on rereading this chapter: When Frodo is speaking to Gandalf after awakening, the wizard tells him about what would have happened if Frodo had succumbed to his wound and become a wraith, saying "he would have tormented you for trying to keep his Ring, if any greater torment ...

I would love to see another film based on the Aubrey-Maturin books, which I have read 3 times. O'Brian is my favorite author other than JRRT. The Aubrey-Maturin series truly immerses the reader into another time and place far different from the present. These books are, in my opinion, far superior t...

I first read LOTR in the late summer between 8th and 9th grade. (Then I immediately read it again.) A few months later I read it again in the fall of ninth grade - I couldn't get enough of it. Anyway, I distinctly remember sitting in 9th grade English class daydreaming about how great LOTR was. And ...

I have two comments about this discussion. The first concerns CT's work on The Sil . As I stated in my post about AR in the "Woohoo" thread, after I waded through HoME I was (and remain) tremendously impressed by the job CT did in constructing the published Sil out of the enormous amount o...

Before HoME raised the Transmission question that is being discussed in this thread, I always just assumed that the Silmarillion was essentially Bilbo's Translations from the Elvish although I did wonder why The Sil was so short - Bilbo gave Frodo 3 books of lore in Rivendell under this title. I nev...

The illustrator of The Silmarillion I referred to in my last post was of course Ted Nasmith (not Tim Naismith).

I'm finally getting around to posting my initial thoughts on Arda Reconstructed , which I received 2 weeks ago and read over the following weekend (about a week ago). I thought I would first give a brief description of my personal history with The Simarillion . LOTR became my favorite book upon my f...

Voronwë, I have noticed something else which may be a typo (or else I am misunderstanding the intent of the footnote in question). There is a footnote at the end of the second paragraph on page 193 after the sentence "Moreover, as we will see in a couple of chapters, Christopher greatly compres...

I found what appear to be two very minor errors with both of them being words which were omitted. On page 25 in the last sentence of the first full paragraph I think the word " be " should be between "to" and "negligible". And on page 112 isn't the word " the "...

I agree with V and Prim. I sure would have liked to have heard Éowyn say "Foul Dwimmerlaik" and I was quite disappointed that this was not in the movie along with some of the other dialogue between her and the Wiki. That was the main reason I said in my prior post that this scene was OK bu...

Elentári - I agree that it would have been great to keep Éowyn's identity a secret until she took off her helmet before the Witch-king, but I don't blame PJ for not doing this. As others have pointed out before, it would have been extremely difficult to keep the audience from learning who Dernhelm w...

The two scenes that I was most surprised and disappointed about not being in the movies were Gollum's near repentance on the stairs (as Voronwë discussed in the beginning of the thread) and the Gandalf-Witchking confrontation at the Minas Tirith gate. These are 2 of my absolute favorite scenes in th...
