Re: News from Bree and other random discussions

A relatively modern bias. The truly ancient Venus figure is of a hugely pregnant or obese woman with no face with braided hair all the way around the head. I agree that the figure on the ring has a headdress. Not sure what is going on with the face. Perhaps it wasn't intended to represent a living ...

Re: News from Bree and other random discussions

Did you put up a link to that? I wasn't able to link (and I'm not on Twitter) but that is fascinating! Wikipedia article on Ring of Silvaianus and connection to Tolkien/The One Ring.

Re: World News Thread

Unfortunately, there have been such cases in Ireland, the US, and probably elsewhere. It's a tragedy. Worse, a horror.

Re: Good music and other good stuff on youtube and Facebook

From Youtuber Homberguy, a great (and topical) little documentary on the Andrew Wakefield MMR vaccine controversy. I knew the basics of the scandal but not the full story. The video was long so I almost didn't watch it, but I'm glad I did. It moved along nicely and was easy to follow. The claims of...

Re: Nature Pics

Are they vultures or turkey vultures? Has it been cool in the mornings and is this when you notice this behavior? If so, I believe they do this to raise their body temperature when the sun is out. I'm going to guess they are turkey vultures. Here's a good article on the 3 types of vultures found in ...

Túrin

Impenitent, thanks for your reply. I didn't see it earlier. At least you can be thankful that your country has been spared the worst of COVID. Who knows what will happen going forward with so many people refusing vaccines.

Re: What are you reading?

Rigid. :D And it has a small crack from some bit of long done magic. I miss doing all of those fun things with the kids. I still have a small cache of extra unfinished wands that didn't get chosen sitting on my counter - and that had to be almost 20 years ago! There are 2 that are 'pr...

Re: What are you reading?

Frelga :mike drop: Perfect answer. Voronwë, My daughter loves all things raccoon. She was quite obsessive about it when she was young. I had a raccoon tooth which is placed inside the handle. I can't quite recall now, but I'm sure I made up some story in which it wasn't just an ordinary raccoon but ...

We used Sculpy clay.. the stuff you bake in the oven. The handle is made of Sculpy too.

Re: What are you reading?

The first Harry Potter book became a hit when my daughter was in 3rd or 4th grade. Just the right time to get her interested in reading. There were book release parties where you could dress up and win prizes and the book stores did all sorts of fun things. Of course we had neighbors who protested t...

Re: World News Thread

I've been reading that Australia, in addition to fires and floods, viral plague (COVID), they also are inundated with mice, which in turn is creating a plague of snakes. Good grief, biblical proportions and whatnot. What say our friends in Australia? How are you holding up? Impy? Túrin?

Re: TV obsessions—come on, admit it!

Currently re-watching the seasons of 'Vikings' with my wife. I saw most of the episodes as they aired but there were some gaps. Enjoying the rewatch! Did the final season ever air? Final season as in Season 6 Part 2 consisting of 10 episodes, yes. All episodes were released to Prime in many countri...

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

I grew up in 'Greater Chicagoland'. While I was fairly young I wonder what I'd remember, if anything, watching the film.
