Re: Trump's America
Obama's ME policy was designed to scale back from the batshit crazy levels of W to the merely dangerous levels of every president before him. But once you've gone batshit, it's hard to go back.

Re: Should you punch a Nazi? The limits of tolerance
Re the removal of monuments, I recall a spirited discussion back in the early days of b77, about the ethics of deleting posts. It strikes me that removing these monuments is like deleting posts; it disrespects the integrity of past conversation. It says, we, now, are all that matters. This is a dee...

Re: Strange new worlds
There's a hypothesis that plant life was once (a looooong time ago) more purple than green, driven by retinal-based photosynthesis. Of course, the sun and atmosphere were also different, so ambient light probably had a different spectrum.

A different way of framing the question: Tolerance is not a moral precept.

Re: The last movie you saw Thread
Really want to see Get Out this week. Just saw Logan, which was pretty intense. Someone should strap Zack Snyder down and make him watch how to do a "serious" superhero movie.

Re: Should you punch a Nazi? The limits of tolerance
My view would be violence was justified against the Nazis once removing them through non-violent means had become impossible. IOW, once they dismantled the democratic process. Of course, at that point they've, you know, dismantled the democratic process, so it's too late to do anything else. It wou...

Re: Should you punch a Nazi? The limits of tolerance
The only difference between the alt-right and Nazism is PR, and even that may no longer be the case. The message boards they inhabit are replete with calls for various groups to be exiled, imprisoned, or killed. In the last instance, the methodologies suggested are often sadistic.

Re: Self-driving cars
The only barrier between self-driving semi trucks and the marketplace is regulation and insurance. The technology to have a caravan of twenty of them, driving the same (most efficient) speed for hours without taking breaks--and driving a foot apart to draft--already exists.

The Carrier deal was of course stupidly popular, even though it's pretty pointless: http://www.businessinsider.com/united-tech-ceo-says-trump-deal-will-lead-to-more-automation-fewer-jobs-2016-12 http://www.forbes.com/sites/eriksherman/2016/12/04/trumps-carrier-deal-means-nothing-for-future-jobs/#67...

Re: Hopefully this doesn't break my son's English teacher
I was glad to hear the teacher agreed with me... and as it turns out they revised the curriculum to no longer include assigned books for SIXTH grade this year, and will get to seventh grade...next year. And possibly eighth.

Hopefully this doesn't break my son's English teacher
So Kian loved the first book in English this year ("Ender's Game") and hates the second ("The Book Thief"). As in refuses to read past page fifty. The teacher alerted us to this fact while I was out of the country, and my wife dutifully assured him we'd do something about it. I ...

A little like Cate Blanchett in that regard--it takes a solid director to pull her actual acting ability out of her.

But consider Wisconsin -- there were approximately 140k fewer votes cast in 2016 compared to 2012 Wisconsin had something else going on: http://www.jsonline.com/story/news/local/milwaukee/2016/11/10/milwaukee-elections-head-says-voter-id-law-hurt-citys-turnout/93607154/ And it's always nice to see ...

Re: 2016 United States Election
The raw numbers don't tell the whole story. There's many different possibilities, as the county-by-county results will show when they're finalised. Many people who voted for Obama in 2012 didn't vote this time. Certainly people who voted for Romney didn't vote this time (like the Bushes, who didn't...

Re: 2016 United States Election
Okay, looking at the actual numbers: Trump got roughly the same number of votes Romney lost with, but Hilary got 5 million fewer votes than Obama did in 2012. The results didn't come about because tons of people changed parties, or because rural voters were determined to send a message, or any othe...

Re: 2016 United States Election
Something I received from my Senatorial candidate today which hit the pause button on my research into getting out of Dodge: This is the email where I’m supposed to thank you for all you’ve done for me, tell you how much it meant to me, and then say my goodbyes and wish you luck on your journey. I’...
