Re: fiber arts and handicrafts

Yes, this is my older daughter who lives nearby. They are giving up on the hobby farm and moving to town. It is a lovely house now, after all the renovations we've helped her with. They just can't keep up with all the work needed for the outside stuff and are moving to a smaller place in a nice subd...

I wouldn't have picked those colors, but that's what she wanted.

Re: What are you reading?

I generally like Scalzi's work. I'll have to get that short story. :)

Re: What are you reading?

I also couldn't find Starship Sakira, the author Bob Blanton, or the series Delphi in Space. Oh well, I'll try again later. They sound interesting. I can add it to the end of my to-read list, currently at about 230 books. An embarrassment of riches. :P In the audiobooks, it says that the author is ...

Re: What are you reading?

I'm on this series right now: https://www.amazon.com/Starship-Sakira-Delphi-Space-Book-ebook/dp/B0812822L3 First novel is The Starship Sakira. The reader is mediocre, but the story is good enough I'm sticking with it. It's sort of the opposite of a disaster tale- which is what I'm liking right now. ...

Re: fiber arts and handicrafts

Very interesting! Cedar trees are weeds here, and I would have no trouble at all getting some of that inner bark to experiment with. I'd love to be able to make something moth proof out of my sheep's wool.

Re: fiber arts and handicrafts

That's a nice depiction! I've been thinking about trying a sweater with crochet. Maybe after my next few projects are done. Crochet isn't as stretchy as knit, so I'll have to make cardigan style, I think. And I like the idea of cedar fiber woven in to keep moths away. How do they make it soft enough...

I never knew you could do things like that with straw. I've never even considered straw for artistic purposes.

Wow!

Re: fiber arts and handicrafts

That is pretty- but I'm not understanding---- is that marquetry or applique of straw? I've never seen straw applique before and don't know what it looks like.

Re: fiber arts and handicrafts

Yeah, I know that. I was told in high school art class to "draw what you see" and never got past that, really. When we lived in Germany, I fell in love with marquetry pictures... probably because you can't do photo realism in that medium. The first one I ever saw was this model: https://ww...

Re: fiber arts and handicrafts

I detest the smell of moth balls, so we rely on cedar smell to keep the moths away. It works if the wool item is actually in the same room as the cedar. Not so much if they are on opposite sides of the house. I used to paint when I was young, but I never stuck with it or got good at it. I tried to p...

Re: fiber arts and handicrafts

My maternal grandmother taught me how to crochet when I was quite young- maybe 6 or 7. Over half a century ago. :) She had some absolutely fabulous crocheted rag rugs that she'd done some time before she went blind. My mom still has those. Very pretty. I've made a few rag rugs, but have found them t...

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

We rewatched "The Princess Bride" on New Year's Eve. It was a spur of the moment decision to keep ourselves awake until midnight, but we didn't check the movie length or anything. Anyway... it worked out that just as Princess Buttercup was jumping out the window, I checked the time.... and...

Re: fiber arts and handicrafts

Well, it was a 4 day weekend for me, and I sort of obsessed over it. I spent all day yesterday and the day before crocheting and unraveling and re-crocheting until I got the tension right. Impy, For rugs, I chain 3 or 4 yarns together to create one big yarn and then use a huge crochet hook to croche...

Re: Have you read...can you recommend...

My initial assessment: the book is almost too fragile to read. :( It was printed in 1969 and the pages are yellowed to the point of being orange. I'm afraid to open the book more than a few degrees because all those pages are going to fall out if I do. I'm going to have to hold the spine closed with...

Re: Have you read...can you recommend...

Has anyone read the Perry Rhodan series? I just found out this week that it is considered the epitome of the space opera genre, and I'd never even heard of it before. It's a German series of "space opera" novels that has been continued by different authors since the early 1960s. I'...

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

We weren't in the US when Princess Bride was released, and it was gone from theaters when we came back to the US- so we were years late in discovering it. Even so, we were thoroughly captivated by the movie when we finally saw it. I think it's a great story, and we re-watch it every decade or so. Wh...
