Low quality pic because it was from a cheap internet video monitor thingy. We just happened to have it pointed where a group of vultures came to do their posing thing.

They hold that wings up position for minutes at a time. Very strange.

Re: What are you reading?

I'm completely unhappy with a series I restarted after decades. I liked the first two books of Robert Aspirin's "Phule's Company" when I read them long ago, and since they popped up on Audible recently I decided to listen to them. The first two books I could still almost quote verbatim in ...

Re: Nature Pics

They are definitely not California Condors or Black Vultures, so Turkey vulture it seems to be. The pic was taken at noon, and the day wasn't particularly chilly. The first time I saw them doing this *hold the wings up* thing was about a month ago, on a fence. 20210415_084055.jpg Again, it was close...

Re: Nature Pics

The vultures around where I live have taken to posing on top of barns lately. They spread their wings out and hold them there for minutes at a time. I've never noticed this behavior before this year, but now I've seen it half a dozen times already. 20210511_144449.jpg It's very strange. And sort of ...

Re: What are you reading?

Stormlight Archive. Sort of a guilty pleasure--mechanically, the writing is not great, but they're 1000-page books and I've been going through them in about 2 weeks each, so obviously doing something right. I love the Stormlight Archives! Well... there were parts of the last one that really annoyed...

Re: What are you reading?

That's the beginning of the real series which pretty much consists of the life of Miles Vorkosigan. :) "Shards of Honor" and "Barrayar" are just basically stories about his parents. They show up a lot in the later books, but the stories are about Miles. Edit: In case that wasn't ...

"Barrayar" is next.

Have I mentioned I end up re-reading that series about once a year or so?

I'm going through the Liaden Universe series again, now. A new book came out and I thought I'd review the whole series before reading the new one. I'm on the last re-read now. :)

Ah... Missouri. Why do I stay here?

And don't forget when we elected a dead man to the US Senate back in 2000. :nono:

Re: Music to cry to

I get annoyed when music makes me cry. It feels like emotional manipulation and I try to avoid things like that. Thus, I don't have a favorite tear jerker music piece. But.. if you must have an example.... this *thing* makes me cry every time I've run across it. Just now when I was making sure I got...

Re: What Superpower would you like to have?

Weather control would be nice.
Of course, then someone would weaponize it and there would be massive fights for control.

On second thought, let Gaia keep control of the weather.

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

Of all the things that we needed constitutional amendments for, pardon power is very far down on the list. IMNSHO. In light of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announcing a whole bunch of cuts to postal services Wednesday, something that Biden might prioritize over fixing the pardon power (where I ad...

Re: The Kindle Books and Resources List

I listen to stories I've already heard before when I'm doing things that take more than a minimum of my attention. It's not critical if I miss a word or even a whole sentence that way. I can listen to new stories when I commute, because my brain is basically on autopilot then anyway. I often listen ...

Re: TV obsessions—come on, admit it!

I started watching Resident Alien. It's entertaining. I was glad to find that my stress levels went down enough that I can tolerate some amount of dark humor. We watched the first couple of episodes of that on youtube of all places, and then it disappeared. :( We don't have access to any of the pla...

Re: fiber arts and handicrafts

OK, they were fermenting carbs and that creates acid which weakens the wool fibers. I didn't *think* yeasts could eat proteins.

Re: fiber arts and handicrafts

I didn't know you could ferment protein! That's amazing. I've dabbled with dying and the color washes out so easy that I quit trying. The only thing I used dyed wool is with felted animal sculptures that will never get wet. I am really impressed with the fermentation technique. However that works. :...

I think that picture right there explains the purpose of murmurations all by itself. All of a sudden a flock of small creatures looks like one great big creature that could possibly eat the would be predator hunting the little birds.
