Yesterday I followed a rabbit trail that led me into the world of youtube videogame music covers. There are lots of these, and some of the artists are clearly making money from them--in some cases going as far as selling albums. That got me wondering if any of this is legal--can a composer copyright a melody itself, or only their particular arrangement of it? Or are all these individuals actually buying rights to every song they cover and somehow still keeping a positive bottom line?
