A Democratic candidate for Georgia's state supreme court, the former Congressman John Barrow, "filed a federal lawsuit Monday to block the state’s judicial watchdog agency from seeking misconduct charges against him for centering his campaign for a seat on the Georgia Supreme Court on a pledge to support abortion rights. The lawsuit came days after the Judicial Qualifications Commission informed the former Democratic lawmaker he was facing a complaint for pledging to 'protect' abortion rights against a 2019 Republican-backed state law that restricts the procedure."

The Republican legislature in Louisiana is working on a bill that would designate the abortion drug mifepristone as a "dangerous controlled substance."

Donald Trump's two weeks are up.
N.E. Brigand wrote: Tue Apr 30, 2024 6:18 pm Donald Trump was interviewed by Time and gave alarming answers on several topics, including abortion rights. On that subject:

1. He won't rule out a national abortion ban (which many Republicans promise to pass if they control Congress).

2.a. He says he has a "very strong" opinion about whether the abortion pill mifepristone should be banned, but he's going to keep it to himself for two weeks. There has been discussion among Republicans about invoking the Comstock Act to criminalize the sale of this pill across state lines.

2.b. The interview was conducted April 12 but only released today. More than two weeks later, on April 27, Time followed up with a second interview. Trump again said that his plans regarding mifepristone would be released in two weeks.

3. He says states led by Republicans should be permitted to monitor pregnant women to make sure they don't have abortions.

I like to see Joe Biden embracing Donald Trump's characterization ("If the radical Democratic extremists get their way, they will have a federal law for abortion").

Maryland's former governor, Larry Hogan, a moderate Republican running for U.S. Senate, claims in a new pro-choice campaign ad that he will introduce federal legislation to codify the abortion rights in Roe vs. Wade. He probably genuinely means that, and it's gratifying that both major candidates in Maryland are on the right side of this issue, but as noted here, his Democratic opponent, Angela Alsobrooks, the Prince George's County Executive, should point out that such legislation would go nowhere in a Republican-controlled Senate (which is a likely enough outcome as it is and assured if Hogan gets elected).

An update on this race:
N.E. Brigand wrote: Tue May 07, 2024 3:57 am A Democratic candidate for Georgia's state supreme court, the former Congressman John Barrow, "filed a federal lawsuit Monday to block the state’s judicial watchdog agency from seeking misconduct charges against him for centering his campaign for a seat on the Georgia Supreme Court on a pledge to support abortion rights. John Barrow is on track to lose by at least ten points tonight to the incumbent Republican. The consensus opinion appears to be that, aforementioned lawsuit outstanding, this contest was "over before it started" because (1) Barrow didn't run much of a campaign, (2) his opponent had the endorsement of Governor Brian Kemp, (3) Georgia ballots give the edge to the "incumbent" by putting that word on the ballot (!), (4) Barrow was well outspent, and (5) Kemp played some dirty tricks over the past four years with suspiciously timed resignations, delayed appointments, and adverse court judgements, resulting in three other Georgia Supreme Court races tonight where Kemp's appointees faced no Democratic opposition. It's a bit hard to follow, but apparently judges keep announcing in the spring that they'll be retiring in the fall, which lets Kemp cancel the election that they would have faced and announce a temporary replacement to serve out their term. Seems pretty gross.

Oh look, Texas Republicans nearly killed another pregnant woman. They failed, but not for want of trying. Better luck next time?

Lots of people are arguing that the law isn't intended to cause harm like this. But let's be honest: Republicans have been warned repeatedly about the consequences of draconian anti-abortion legislation, so yes, their laws are absolutely written in order to kill women. They may not admit it openly, but that's the goal.

"Texas's abortion ban prevented doctors from providing an abortion to a woman with a failing pregnancy—forcing her to instead pass the pregnancy on her own. She spent days in agony, vomiting and bleeding, until she passed out from blood loss and nearly died. This victim of Texas's abortion ban already had a nine-month-old baby. The state's draconian laws almost killed that child's mother." (This story was reported in the Dallas News.)

That law wouldn't be in place if not for Donald Trump.

I've known that for a number of years... :(
When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes The Rose.

Ugh. "An interesting data point: low/mid-engagement voters are likelier than high-engagement peers to disapprove of the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade (66% vs. 60%). But they're also likelier to say that Donald Trump's position on abortion is 'about right.' (53% vs. 49%)."

Donald Trump boasts about the Supreme Court decision. And yet more than 10% of voters don't like the decision but think Trump is right about abortion?

But wait, it's actually much worse.

The top cause of death for pregnant women is homicide. But, it is not included in most perinatal mortality statistics.

And of the non-violent maternal deaths, 80% are preventable with modern healthcare and social support policies common in the civilized countries.

Vice President Kamala Harris appeared on late-night television yesterday to promote abortion rights:

Surprised to learn that Harris has never met the convicted criminal Donald Trump.

Also today, Congressional Republicans blocked a bill that would protect the right to access contraception.

1. "Conservatives tied to Trump want to limit insurance coverage for abortions. The proposal could make it more difficult for those with private-employer insurance to get out-of-state abortions, legal experts say.[/url]" Per that Washington Post article, "policymakers influential with former president Donald Trump are discussing how to use a little-known labor law to impose sweeping restrictions on private-employer-covered abortions, according to a public statement and two people with direct knowledge of labor policy discussions among Trump advisers."

2. This weekend, Donald Trump will be in Indianapolis to address the Danbury Institute, whose website says: "Abortion must be ended. We will not rest until it is eradicated entirely."

Some who have scoring simply cannot afford to have a child/another child, cannot afford to miss work or pay for child care. With insurance an uncomplicated delivery is roughly $2,500.00, without insurance about $20,000.00 and up. And that's just for starters. It's such a complicated decision from so many angles, the government shouldn't be enforcing such cruelty especially not claiming a 'moral' high ground

"The Southern Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest Protestant denomination, has voted at their annual meeting to oppose In Vitro Fertilization."

(When Roe v. Wade was decided, 75% of Southern Baptist Convention pastors supported abortion rights. But their congregations did not.)
