Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I think a clearer answer is needed.

"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
This was spoken by Sauron, about Melkor, to Ar-Pharazôn:
But he that is their master shall yet prevail, and he will deliver you from this phantom; and his name is Melkor, Lord of All, Giver of Freedom, and he shall make you stronger than they.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Assuming that is the answer (and it certainly is the quote that I thought of too), the correct answer to Inanna's question should certainly have been "Melkor".

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Let's say you said nothing at the last meeting. Or do you have something to say?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
That's brilliant!
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

No.
Unless you mean that as a pun...

I have an idea who this is, but I'll let someone else try.

Hint:
The last word in the translation ended up as the exact opposite of the word in the original.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Hmmm? What is the opposite of "say"? (Not actually asking you to answer that, just musing "aloud".)

Just as a lark, is it Gildor to Frodo: "In this meeting there may be more than chance; but the purpose is not clear to me, and I fear to say too much

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
No, quite a bit after that.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Opposite of say: "ask"?
'You just said "your getting shorter": you've obviously been drinking too much ent-draught and not enough Prim's.' - Jude
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I know this one! Mostly due to Jude's clue. Its quite specific if you think about it!

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I'm pretty sure Alatar has it...
No, the word in question is the real, absolute logical opposite to "say". "Ask" could probably be called a subset of "say". (In English, we don't "say a question", but in some languages you do)Inanna wrote:Opposite of say: "ask"?

Think?
Be quiet?

More opposite than those.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Oh go on so, I'll post it. Gandalf to Saruman in "The Voice of Saruman".
'What have you to say that you did not say at our last meeting?' he asked. 'Or, perhaps, you have things to unsay?'
