Twenty years ago, the world changed. You could feel it in the water, feel it in the earth, smell it in the air – The Lord of the Rings began filming.

You can feel it right here!

Wow, those trailers bring back memories. Despite all their flaws, they were great, great movies.

P.S. for those who hadn't yet read the books, the trailer for The Two Towers gives away a major spoiler (the return of Gandalf). What do you think - good idea? Bad idea?

Wait; so they're turning the flight to the ford into an action sequence?!?! And Pippin drops a whole skeleton into the well instead of just a stone? Talk about over the top!!!

Not to relitigate old arguments, but that scene is such a good example at how clever the screenwriters were at using Tolkien's own words in often different contexts to good effect.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

But the Ring was too powerful and would have instantly corrupted him!
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

I watched some clips from behind the scenes yesterday.. there was a clip about the many women riders who filled in for 'horselords' of Rohan and the jokes about bearded women (one of whom Viggo had taken a liking to) which was pretty funny. Some of the scenery including Hobbiton, WETA stuff, etc.. brings back such wonderful memories of our trip to NZ. *sigh* For a few faults (my greatest gripe is what they did to Faramir) they really were amazing films.
My heart is forever in the Shire.

A lifetime ago...
... and the question still remains.... Do Balrogs have Wings?

Catherine Bray who was known as 'Elentári' on TORC back in 2000 has made this 'short' on the making of the Lord of the Rings movies:

It's also on BBC Arts for those of you who are in the UK.
"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."
