Was the second sentence something like "the sooner the better" in the original?

Edit to bring it to the new page:

Quote:
Yes, certainly. Faster is better. Don't be too kind!

Is this Gandalf advising Frodo about leaving the Shire?

Ah, it's in the Scouring, Merry to Frodo:

‘Yes indeed; the sooner the better,’ said Merry. ‘And don’t be too gentle! He’s responsible for bringing in these ruffians, and for all the evil they have done.’

Yes. Not the last sentence, but the rest of it.

Your turn.

Tell me your story and my lies now. My son's words are welcome.

The first few that I tried barely changed at all, and were too recognizable. This one is not! I did remove the equivalent of "he said" in the middle of the quote in order keep it from revealing the speaker

If I'm right, it got shortened significantly:

Quote:
Now tell me your tale, my liege, for the words of one whom my son so befriended will be welcome indeed.

This should be easy, because the meaning didn't change at all:

Quote:
Obviously we are so similar, so your desire to put incurable depression in my hat should be tolerated.

Oh gosh, I remember a line about putting a dent in a hat, but I can't remember from where. Was the hat Gandalf's?

So I think that between you, you've narrowed it down enough to make it super-easy to find...
