The word "Orsa" has nothing to do with bears. But Orsa has a large wildlife park Orsa Rovdjusparken (Orsa the predator park) with polar bears,Kodiak bears, Wolfs,Persian leopard and Snow leopard etc.Frelga wrote:Does Orsa have anything to do with bears or not in Swedish?

Re: Nature Pics
I was going to post one picture from my recent trip to Yosemite, but that isn't really possible.

Those are stunning!
(How close were you to that bear?)

Re: Nature Pics
The bear was probably 50 feet away, or less, but down a slope from the side of the road. She acted completely oblivious of the dozens of people who parked on the side of the road and watched her.
The stag was a few feet in front of me, and totally unconcerned. Aren't those antlers amazing?

Re: Nature Pics
Awesome! Yosemite is on my bucket list, I'll get there some day! And hopefully also make friends with pretty woodland critters too.

Fantastic pictures, V! Where did you take them? Looks like you are pretty high up.

Re: Nature Pics
The ones that look like I was high up were taken from Glacier Point.

Glacier Point! I thought it was the same vantage point we hiked to once, but couldn't remember the name of the place.

Re: Nature Pics
Impressive! The Four Mile trail (which is both its name and approximate one way distance) ascends over 3000 feet from Yosemite Valley to Glacier Point over the course of those four miles. It is not an easy hike! We did it the last time we were at Yosemite, but didn't do it this time (we drove up to Glacier Point before we left). We did do the Mist Trail/John Muir Trail loop that goes to Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls (and got very, very wet!), but that is only a little more than 2000 feet elevation gain. Those are the two falls that can be seen in the fourth picture above (taken from Glacier Point), and the sixth picture is the top of Nevada Falls.

Re: Nature Pics
Please be careful, Voronwë. Even the whitetail deer we have in Missouri can be very dangerous. They attack by rearing up on their hind feet and battering you with their sharp hooves.
Youtube is full of deer attacks. Here's a bad one:

In other words, that close was too close. You never know when herbivores are going to switch to a fear based attack.

Re: Nature Pics
The deer in Yosemite Valley are very acclimated to humans. Too much so, actually. There is no danger from them; the danger is to them, from cars, and even more from cluelessly kind humans who think it is a good idea to feel wild animals.

Well, if you see them stomp a forefoot, back up more. That means they are upset, no matter how calm they look.

Feeling wild animals is always a risk.
Yosemite is such a precious gem. A stunning place, as many of our National Parks are. Gorgeous photos. Thank you for sharing V.
We were up north this weekend and saw a stunning dragonfly. It was about 4" long and 5 or 6" wide. I had no idea they crawled out of such a hideous nymph.

The dragonfly crawls out of the nymphs back after it splits .. like an alien. It was about 2" tall (long?)

Oh! That is simply stunning! California has so many gorgeous parks. It's a lovely area you live in. I confess to being jealous.
