I can understand songs a lot better these days. Maybe I’ll try harder to listen to them. It wasn’t worth it the past 15 years or so; I just couldn’t follow the words if I didn’t already know them. It made me dislike listening to songs except as mindless background. I had an irrational resentment of being left out of something I used to love and lots of people still loved.

This has been my Why I Can’t Name Even 12 Songs I Love TED Talk.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

So, just to be clear, this is not an attempt to make a list of my all-time favorite songs. This is Today's List of 100 Songs I Really Love.

Though as I said elsewhere, I'm so bad with song names and group names, this is also really just a List Of 100 Songs Whose Name/Artist I Could Remember (or at least, remember enough of the lyrics for a Google search to be helpful.)

But I also wanted to keep it to songs you could listen to if you wanted so it wasn't just a random song name on the screen so this is also a list of 100 Songs I Really Love That I Could Remember The Name Of And Could Find On YouTube Today.

I kept it to 1 song per artist with two exceptions, I could not decide between the two Of Monsters And Men songs so they are both on, and I kinda cheated with the Seether Song featuring the singer of Evanescence, and another song by Evanescence. But otherwise I tried to give as broad of a sampling as I could.

Enjoy!

Soooo many interesting songs, and right there where I can pick and choose....

Oh my God, I so wish my work had not JUST started up again.

I mean, sorta. We need to eat and all that. But this is so much richness. . . .

Thoughts after reviewing el's top100 list (sorry, I'm not counting the misc add-ons :P):

I love seeing on lists like this how people can love both music by both Metallica and Beethoven among their favorites, can love both a country ballad by Andrew Jackson and some smart-ass hip-hop by the Beastie Boys. :)

Artists that I recognize or am at least vaguely familiar with: 30

Songs that I recognize: 19

Pretty good on the "familiarity with your tastes in music" front I'd say. I will probably listen to the ones I'm not familiar with at work next week.

12. Saeglopur - Sigur ros
I'm curious, are you familiar with them in general? Do you recognize the two that made my list?
19. Here I Dreampt I Was An Architect - Decemberists
Hey, we each have songs off this album! Castaways and Cutouts is one of my all-time favorite albums. :)
49. Something I Can Never Have - Nine In Nails
Oof, such a rough choice. I genuinely can't listen to this song because it affects me too much, and the effect is not a happy one....
84. Sinnerman - Nina Simone
This one came very close to making my list. It got beaten out by two other Nina songs but this would likely have been my 3rd pick.
97. Down To The River To Pray - Alison Kraus
This one also came very close to making my list, along with "Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby". Both songs would probably make a list of 150.

This is fun - next up, V-man's list!
I wanna love somebody but I don't know how
I wanna throw my body in the river and drown

Re Voronwë's list—when we're coming home from a road trip, we always put in American Beauty in time that we can hear "Box of Rain" just as we're coming into Eugene. It means home for us.

I know! At first, I had well over 100 songs. Then I started getting more selective, and I have less than 100 because I don't want to give away the slots so easily.

"Box of Rain" was the first Grateful Dead song that I fell in love with. By the time I started to see them live, Phil Lesh had stopped singing for many years, having damaged his vocal cords unnaturally singing high harmonies. Then, at a show in Hampton, Virginia in 1986, at the end of the first set Bob Weir announced "now we're going to prove that practice makes perfect." As soon as the started the first few notes the audience exploded, and the whole first verse was virtually drowned out by the cheers. Phil's voice was (and is) still shot, but it didn't really matter. That song (which was written when Phil's father was dying and is a tribute to him) is still the most moving song I know.

I think I stumbled across this one while I was listening to a variety of random Nordic or Nordic-esque music. I immediately fell in love with this song but I never really explored them further. Not even sure why. I will listen to yours, though, as I am probably missing out on some great stuff!
19. Here I Dreampt I Was An Architect - Decemberists

It was so hard to narrow them down to one!! I love so much of their stuff
49. Something I Can Never Have - Nine In Nails

Not all my favorite songs are happy songs.
84. Sinnerman - Nina Simone
This one came very close to making my list. It got beaten out by two other Nina songs but this would likely have been my 3rd pick.
Unfortunately this is another area where I have a favorite more through lack of competition - I haven't listened to much else by her, which is yet another oversight I need to remedy.
97. Down To The River To Pray - Alison Kraus
This one also came very close to making my list, along with "Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby". Both songs would probably make a list of 150.

Seems like he's someone we should think about." - Dave_LF

I do love Alison Kraus' voice. I don't think I have a favorite song of hers, though. Dang. This is hard! :rage:

Okay, well, I've put too much time and effort into this to change anything now, so here goes. There are a handful of songs on here that I could easily remove and replace with something else if I could just think of what those replacements would be. I did create a playlist on YouTube, which is hilarious, because I put these songs in alphabetical order by artist (mostly). That means some very jarring song transitions. I blatantly broke the rules in a few instances because I wanted to. However, I did try very hard to limit it to no more than 2 songs per artist. You'll see where I failed. I have the years listed, and I plan to chart that out of curiosity. I could do the male/female analysis, too. Most importantly, I followed yovi's directive that I couldn't edit my selections to make myself look cooler. I think this is unfair but a good lesson in honesty. Therefore, you will see more songs from the 60s and 70s than I would normally admit to. These are the songs of my childhood, the songs of my parents. Even the later songs surprised me by having release dates that were much earlier than I would have gotten into them. So I think I was always about 5-10 years behind the times. (Rock 'n' roll was of the devil, you know.)

So, without further ado, here is my list.

Playlist on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... h7i6mJNSQR
(Even if you don't want to listen to the songs on YouTube, I like the visuals better on my song list here, so it might be worth it to click on the link just to see everything in a nicer format.)

I see you violated yov's "no more than 2 songs per artist" rule.

My brain is not cooperating on how to get Excel to cooperate on creating the kind of year chart that yovi created. I will keep working on it. (The new version is less familiar to me. :suspicious:)

I did do a countif function to determine my male to female ratio.

I have 20 females (21 if you include the Mamas with the Papas).
I have 79 males (80 if you include the Papas with the Mamas).
Or maybe it should 20.5 females and 79.5 males. :D

Some of those bands do have female members, but I went with the lead singer for gender.

Well, I'm kind of disappointed in that, but I do tend to prefer male voices. And I do think there are just more male artists out there.
